This works well enough for me. I only do occasional soldering. This does the job of removing old solder from the breadboard. It can be a little difficult to clean off, but not too bad.

This review is for the: Paladin Tools PA1700 Desoldering Pump, Solder SuckerThis solder sucker was supplied to me through Amazon's VINE program. This review was written on December 4, 2021, amended on January 5, 2022, and represents my opinions on the product. For those who may not remember there was a CBS TV Western staring Richard Boone called: Have Gun - Will Travel (1957-1963.) Boone went by the single character name, Paladin. He was a fast draw for-hire gun slinger who lived in a fancy hotel in San Francisco. He was so much of a gentleman's gun slinger he handed out business cards (see Wikipedia pix.)According to Merriam-Webster a "paladin" is a trusted military leader and a champion of cause. As for "Paladin Tools" I have collected many for my arsenal. They are stalwart tools in the cause of getting work done. And, this desoldering solder sucker is no different.Paladin Tools has had a rather peripatetic history. It now is a brand of Tempo Communications, Inc. in Vista California. This PS1700 is made in Taiwan.Other reviewers here have given ample descriptions and tear downs, so I won't repeat.I have several attributes that I like to see in a ‘solder sucker.'#1: When one primes it by depressing the pump the tip clearing rod needs to go all the way through the tip, and then retract a bit to allow space for the liquid solder to first enter the tip. If the rod doesn't go all the way through the tip, it may clog. Then once the pump is spring-loaded or cocked in the ready position the tip must pull back just enough to make space for the melted solder. One reviewer had a problem with this but my copy worked perfectly.#2: It needs to have good internals so it can create decent suction. That requires a good gasket, and machining of parts. The PA1700 passed with flying colors.#3: A good solder sucker should have replaceable tips, and tips of different types. It seems that the PA1700 fails on this account. Tempo Communications lists only one replaceable tip, Part: PA2712, (shame) and shows it as "discontinued" (double shame.)One reviewer noted from the description on Amazon's page: "Repair kits come complete with replacement spring and suction rods" but I could find no such repair kit on Amazon or on the Tempo Communications site. And, anyway, they should just include an extra tip in the box.So it works great, like some gun slingers in the West, but once it ages there's no turning back.I rate it four stars for good design and function, but it loses that fifth star for not having replaceable tips.

this is a nicely machined de-soldering tool but the tip constantly clogs and that is a major headache.

Disclaimer: I received this product for free through the Vine program.I've been using braided copper wick for desoldering and when I saw this on Vine, I thought I'd give it a try. I have to say I'm amazed at how much better this pump works for removing solder from circuit boards. Using the copper wick never worked all that well. The copper kept dissipating heat before the solder would melt and it would never completely soak up the solder, leaving some on the leads and circuit board. By contrast, this desoldering pump works fabulously at removing solder much more quickly and completely. You press the plunger until it locks, hold the tip over your molten solder joint, and then press the release button to quickly suck up the liquid solder. I was able to easily remove a four-pin bridge rectifier immediately after using the pump, rather than trying to loosen each lead while using the soldering iron to melt the residual solder left by the wick. This works so well that I don't plan on using the solder wick in the future. This is a sturdy device with a solid aluminum case, steel spring, steel piston rod, O-ring sealed plastic tip, and piston. It is made in Taiwan rather than in the P.R.C. which is a plus to me. The metal parts all look like they will last forever. The plastic tip could eventually wear out, but it was not adversely affected by the molten solder.Although I am extremely pleased with how well this solder sucker works, I do have a couple of issues with the product:First, in the depressed, ready to trigger position the piston rod tip goes all the way to the tip of the plastic nozzle. It obstructs the nozzle so you can't put the nozzle over a lead on the circuit board. It would be nice to position the nozzle right over the lead to get the tip as close as possible to the solder joint.Second, the product listing states: "Repair kits come complete with replacement spring and suction rods. Standard (regular & anti-static) replacement tips available." This product does not come with any spare parts or tips, nor any information on where to get them. I searched on Amazon but could not find any Repair kit nor any replacement tips available.Despite those concerns I'm still giving this product five stars as I am so impressed with how well it works. It's also sturdy enough that I'm not particularly worried about it breaking any time soon, though it would be nice to have a spare tip or two available.
