What is Otamatone?

The Otamatone is a cute, quirky, and fun to play electronic musical instrument characterized by its eighth note-shaped body, adorable moving mouth, and silly, buzzing, amusingly off-key "voice." Developed by design firm Maywa Denki, it was first released in Japan in 2009 and has been the country's best-selling musical instrument ever since.

Innovative, unique, and now a popular instrument worldwide, the Otamatone has earned high praise from fans and the instrument industry.

Available in your choice of Otamatone Deluxe - the largest variety and the one most suited to musicians and others looking to master the instrument, the Original Otamatone, perfect for beginners and those looking for an Otamatone that’s a bit smaller than the Otamatone Deluxe, and the Otamatone Melody, a mini, keychain sized Otamatone great for both adults and collectors that plays a variety pre-recorded melodies.

How does it work?

The Otamatone creates electronic tones that you can control based on the position of your finger on the touch-sensitive fretboard. Use a switch on the back to choose an octave and slide your fingers up and down to play different notes. Open the Otamatone's mouth with a squeeze to change the sound from a hum to an “ahh” and create a “Wah Wah” effect.

A perfect instrument for lovers of all things cute, silly, and weird, the Otamatone also makes a great gag gift, and a unique and amusing gift for violinists and other musicians.

Christmas gift for my grandson. I think he liked it because of the character Kirby. He does enjoy playing with it.

just the original awesome japanese toy-instrumentremember to buy also batteries AAA or the power supply because the test-batteries (included) don't last very much

My son loved this gift. I didn't get the big deal, but he plays with it frequently.

the whole thing works great, and its super fun to play, there's just one problem. Both the box and the product listing say you're able to use headphones with it. There is a headphone jack, but when it's used, the sound will still come out of the speaker as well. I had wanted to buy it thinking that i could play it in a room with other people and not bother them, but it for some reason still uses the outer speaker while also playing through the headphones. Other than that, it works just fine. It takes some time to learn since there's no frets.

The deluxe is much easier to play than the standard. If you want to play an intelligible song, I recommend this one. It is probably a little pricey for what you get, but a fun novelty instrument anyway.

Fun toy/instrument that was a major hit for a couple weeks. Now it rarely gets picked up but it’s still worth it for its whimsy and novelty factor

I bought the Kirby Deluxe and the Unicorn standard sizes in a bundle. I've been having a blast with mine, especially the large-sized deluxe. If you read music, get a set of music stickers and mark the note locations on the side of the neck. I used my electric keyboard to double check, after doing it by ear. I marked mine while set in the mid-tone range. The volume control is nice. I can practice without bothering the neighbors!I think that with your Otamatone, you will get back what you're willing to put into it. Pick out some easier songs and practice until you can play them well. Get the notes down first; the tone and feeling will come later on.Not all of the notes are precise; for sharps and flats, you may have to roll/slide your finger a bit. It takes practice. The good news is that there are a LOT of good Otamatone instructional videos on YouTube in a wide variety of styles and levels of difficulty. My personal favorites of the moment are:"The Squid Game" theme"When You Wish Upon A Star""Gift of a Thistle" (from Braveheart)...and various Disney music from songbooks.Don't expect to play it perfectly right away. Like any musical instrument, if you keep practicing you'll get there! Just have fun, and play music that you LOVE!

First otamatone, actually a little bigger than expected but awesome to mess around with and try and recreate riffs and stuff. Comes with batteries which is a nice little plus, booklet explains everything well

Gibbs loves his Xmas present, the regular size, til it got locked away for 2 weeks. Feeling bad that I couldn't come back to get it for him, I ordered the deluxe version with strap. Didn't want to have 2 of the same size. Both are Kirby versions.. the melody versiin didn't come in Kirby.
