Had a handful (5) of 1TB WD Blue SSD drives. Plopped them in here and plugged it in - works like a charm. Seems to "spin down" the drives a little quicker than I'd like, but the SSDs "spin up" quickly and once ready, I get a full 210MB/s transfer rate to an off-dock drive, 100MB/s between drives on the dock.

With a collection of unused SATA drives sitting around, including 2 x 8TB drives and 2 x 6TB drives, we were in need of a practical solution to put them to good use. This SATA drive unit turned out to be a great option, offering ample storage space, good performance, and useful features like cloning, making it ideal for both personal and backup storage needs. Below is a closer look at its functionality and performance.Key Features:Ample Storage Capacity: The unit easily accommodates multiple large drives—currently, we have 2 x 8TB and 2 x 6TB drives connected. This provides us with significant extra storage space, perfect for backup purposes and other data management tasks. The ability to connect multiple drives is an efficient way to centralize storage without requiring separate enclosures for each drive.Cloning Feature: One of the standout features of this unit is the built-in cloning functionality. This is especially useful for anyone who regularly backs up data or upgrades their drives. Instead of relying on third-party software, the unit allows for direct cloning between drives, streamlining the process and saving time. It’s a simple, no-fuss feature that eliminates the need to install additional software, making backups or data migrations much easier.Good Copy Speeds: The transfer speeds are solid for the type of unit. While not the fastest available, the speeds are more than sufficient for most typical tasks like backups, data storage, and file transfers. Even with multiple drives connected, the unit manages to maintain decent performance levels, which is ideal for everyday use.Performance and Usability:Drive Connectivity: The unit provides reliable connections for all drives, and it has functioned well for the most part. However, one thing to note is that when plugging in new drives or disconnecting existing ones, all the drives are temporarily disconnected during these changes. This could be a minor inconvenience if you’re in the middle of a task, as it may disrupt ongoing processes. However, as long as you're not running any activities (like active file transfers or data operations) when making these changes, this issue is not a major concern.Ease of Use: Overall, the unit is simple to set up and use. The interface is user-friendly, and connecting drives is straightforward. The cloning process, in particular, is intuitive, requiring little more than selecting the source and destination drives and initiating the process.Pros:Ample storage capacity with support for multiple large drives.Convenient built-in cloning feature, removing the need for third-party software.Good transfer speeds for backups, storage, and data management.Easy to set up and use, with a simple user interface.Cons:All drive connections are disconnected when plugging in new drives or disconnecting existing ones, which may interrupt ongoing processes. While the copy speeds are good, they may not be the fastest available on the market, especially for users with more demanding transfer needs. Conclusion:For anyone looking to make use of spare SATA drives, this unit is a great solution. It offers large storage capacity, an efficient cloning feature, and good overall performance for backups and file management. The ability to clone drives directly without relying on third-party software is a major benefit, simplifying the backup process. However, be mindful that connecting or disconnecting drives temporarily disconnects all drives, so it's best to avoid making these changes while running tasks. Overall, it’s a reliable and convenient storage solution, particularly for those who need extra space or regularly back up large amounts of data.

I love this docking station. Every other one that had you slot the HD in vertically always started having problems no matter how I tried to clear out dust and maintain it. I've got a multi-bay Icy Dock, but this blows it away. It's much more convenient for swapping out drives. The only down side would be heat management - it can get a bit warm so I have a small fan that I've rigged up to keep air flowing.I love this docking station so much... I'm tryin to justify getting another one... :)

Edited to add 04/13/2020 (6 months after purchase) - this is now shutting down daily. All drives are removed from the computer because it just randomly turns off, which is a HUGE problem for backups. DO NOT BUY!At first, it worked wonderfully! Easy to set up, plug and play, I was thrilled to have a smaller enclosure on my desk. Previously I had used a StarTech 4 drive bay, and this is MUCH smaller, and quieter. And for two months, we had a beautiful relationship. It is definitely a slower transfer, but no big deal, right?I found out when trying that it is NOT hot-swappable, so the computer has to be shut down to switch out drives. Which I wasn't thrilled with, but okay, it just means shutting down more often, and that's not a bad thing, right? Then, 3 months after installing it, it just started disconnecting. Out of nowhere, nothing weird was going on, no lightning storms, no bumping the outlet. It was a regular day and it would just disconnect completely from the computer. Which, as you can imagine with large capacity hard drives, is a PROBLEM. The drives weren't ejected properly, just removed entirely from the computer. ALL of them. Now, 4 months later, not only is it disconnecting randomly, Windows is also saying that it is USB2.0 and not 3.0. Even though it was the same port that has been used for YEARS with USB3.0 without issue. And of course, the issues start right outside of the return window, right? So disappointing. This bay is highly disappointing and frustrating, and I don't recommend buying it. I have seen other reviews with the same issues, buyer beware.
