I bought this to use a 2230 m.2 to transfer files to & from my phone, a task it utterly fails at.Strike 01: My phone refuses to use it, says it can't mount it after formatting it.Strike 02: ditto for my tablet.Strike 03: my PC doesn't even see it at all.Strike 04, and the real kicker, I can't return it. It uses a very thick thermal pad to fill the space between the face of the drive and the back of the case (good enough idea, in theory, anyway) but now the back of the case is stuck to the drive and there's no way to get any sort of grip on it to try prying it loose. In short, I have a small, physically attractive metal paperweight with a 2TB m.2 inside it.

Overall, I like this SSD enclosure. The good:- The aluminum chassis is a simple two-piece design held together with one screw. It is easy to open to install the SSD, although after removing the screw, you do have to give it a good whack to dislodge the cover the first time.- The PCB is based on the RealTek RTL9210 which is a decent performer - no better or worse than the equivalent JMicron chip anyway. Performance is as expected.- The cable is 30cm (12"), has good strain relief, and comes with an attached USB-C-> USB-A adapter.- Packaging: thin carboard box with formed inner plastic tray - both of which are recyclable. Accessories are packaged in re-useable zip-lock style baggies rather than single-useNeutral:- The included lanyard strap is cute but I question its utility for a product like this. Who actually ties this to their backpack or wears it around their wrist? I consider it a gimmick.Mediocre thermals:- The instructions fail to note that the included thermal pad has thin plastic covers that need to be peeled off. Without peeling, thermal transfer is compromised and the pad slides around instead of sticking.- The kit only includes one thermal pad to sink between the top-side of the SSD and the thin enclosure cover so the SSD doesn't sink to the main chassis directly. This means the enclosure will take a long time to reach thermal equilibrium when in use - potentially resulting in hot spots on the SSD chips. Two additional pads would improve thermal performance tremendously:- - add 0.5mm thermal pad between the Realtek chip and main enclosure bottom- - add 1mm thermal pad between SSD and PCB- As is, the included thermal pad is 2mm thick. This is necessary to accommodate the concavity of the cover plate. Instead, the inside of the cover plate should be flat so that a thinner thermal pad could be used instead. Two additional nit-picks:- the thermal pad comes in a tiny plastic baggy along with the m.2 screw. The bag is so ridiculously small that it is difficult to get the pad out.- the M.2 screw is black, while the exposed enclosure screw is silver - these screws are the same size and should have been swapped for color matching - I swapped mine when I closed it up for a better look. With these minor changes, the enclosure would be 5-stars.

The speeds are good for the chipset from the enclosure.Do note that you need a good USB-C cable not the cheap ones and length does mather, shorter is better. It is really reflected in the transfer speeds.

External enclosures for the NVMe 2230 form factor are still pretty uncommon, so I was really happy to see that Orico now sells one. I got this one to use with a 1TB Sabrent Rocket PCIe 4 NVMe drive that I had leftover after a previous project. It was really easy to install my old 2230 NVMe drive in this enclosure and, after several weeks of heavy use, I'm pleased to report that it functions well on a variety of different Windows 10, Windows 11, and Linux machines. Assuming you use a good cable (many USB C cables aren't very fast for transmitting data, especially those primarily sold as charging/power cables), transfer speeds are stellar. I have absolutely no complaints.

This 2230 NVMe enclosure is a great and high-quality way to create your own external drive. With 2230 drives being more widely available now, you can easily find one to pop in here and create an external SSD of any size you desire. With a 10Gbps interface, you'll probably be able to max that out with just about any drive you put in it. This enclosure is metal and does have some weight to it.

This enclosure is designed to work as an external drive for shooting high-resolution video on iPhones, and for that purpose, it's very well made. While the USB speed is a little bit slower than other SSD enclosures I own, it's perfectly fast enough for the highest resolution, uncompressed video from my iPhone 15 Pro. Further, with its USB-A-capable included cable, it's ready to be connected to any device. And finally, I LOVE the fact that the blue LED is not too bright! So many electronics these days have blindingly-bright blue LEDs on them, and they are such an annoyance. Would be doubly so here if it were interfering with shooting dark video. Thankfully the blue LED on this drive is bright enough to inform you that the drive is active, and dim enough not to distract. The only issue I've had with this is that the removable USB-A adapter is not fully removable, and even when pulled down to its furthest position, I still can't get the USB-C plug to fit into my iPhone when it's in its case. The case is has a firm plastic border around the USB-C plug and it prevents this device from plugging in. I can solve this easily by reversing the cable, sticking the USB-C side into my phone, and then the USB-A-adapter side into the drive. A little bit annoying, but doesn't take away from this great, tough little drive.
