About this item

  • 100% CERTIFIED ORGANIC: Grown in USDA Certified Organic fields on local family farms in the Pacific Northwest. There are NO herbicides, antibiotics, GMOs, or toxic chemicals used, making our organic garden straw mulch safe for you and your pets!
  • MOISTURE RETENTION & COOLING: Our Organic Garden Straw retains moisture, keeping your soil wet longer and reducing the frequency you need to water your garden. The protective straw cover also shades your soil so cool season crops don’t bolt as soon and grow longer into the warmer months.
  • NEW LAWN SEEDING: Great for new yard applications! Garden straw provides warmth and moisture for early spring and late fall grass seed applications. It protects grass seed from scouring due to rain, overwatering or high winds so your new grass growing is off to a great start!
  • NATURAL COMPOSTING: Unlike artificial fabrics, chemicals and covers, organic garden straw is actually good for your garden. Straw naturally composts and slowly adds nutrients back to the soil. Your garden and lawn will remain truly organic while improving your soil and encouraging worm habit.
  • EFFECTIVE WEED BARRIER: Since organic straw mulch blocks out the sun, it can help prevent weeds from growing. Garden straw covers the soil which stops unwanted seed germination from weeds. It can also save on high summer water bills.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE / SPREADING STRAW

Garden Straw Step 1 - Pull Apart and Loosen

PULL APART & LOOSEN

As we try to pack Organic Garden Straw Mulch into each size box, it starts out in a clump. Pull apart and loosen the garden straw as you remove it.

Garden Straw Step 2 - Shake Seed/Chaff into Box

SHAKE OUT SEEDS

If you prefer to have minimal seeds in your straw mulch (which also feeds the soil with important nutrients), shake out the chaff in the box.

Garden Straw Step 3 - Spread Straw

SPREAD STRAW

Spread garden straw mulch liberally over new seeding beds or around plants to provide a protective layer from heavy rain, wind, and scouring during watering, as well as retain soil moisture.

Why is Organic Straw good for my garden?

  • Unlike fabrics and covers, garden straw mulch is actually good for your garden. It’s also good for the earth and the environment. Especially when it doesn’t contain any residual chemicals from spray while being raised on the farms.
  • Straw mulch in gardens blocks out the sun, preventing weeds from growing and preventing hidden weed seeds from germinating.
  • It holds in moisture, so your soil stays damp longer (this means you won’t need to water as often).
  • It shades your soil so cool-season crops don’t bolt as soon (like lettuce, cilantro & broccoli)
  • It works as an organic fertilizer and improves your soil. As the garden straw mulch breaks down and composts, it will make your soil better and encourage worms into your garden.

6 steps to use Blue Mountain Organic Garden Straw to cut down on your weeds:

  • Start by weeding the area where you’d like to use your garden straw mulch.
  • Use a thick layer of straw mulch as soon as you are done weeding the area (do not leave time for the weeds to resprout.
  • Do not cover your vegetable seeds; wait until they are 4-8 inches tall to mulch around them.
  • Whenever you have an empty garden bed, use a thick layer of organic garden straw mulch to prevent weeds from growing, keep the soil moist, encourage worms, and improve your soil.
  • Cram the organic garden straw mulch down between plants such as garlic and onions, when the ground is covered the weeds should not be able to grow.
  • Covering all of your walking paths with a thick layer of straw mulch will also save you a lot of work!

USE BOX AS WEED BARRIER

Weed Barrier - Step 1 - Cut Box

STEP 1

Cut the box in half on 3 sides and corners. Once cut, fold-out flat and cover the area around your plant to create a weed barrier.

Weed Barrier -Step 2 - Prep Box and Plant

STEP 2

Cut an X in the box over the spot you’d like to place your plants. Fold the edges of the X under the box to create a hole. Dig away dirt and plant.

Weed Barrier - Step 3 - Spread Garden Straw

STEP 3

Take straw for your garden and build a thick layer around the new plants and cover the box. Also, don’t forget to water the area.

I really wanted salt hay for a lawn seeding, but this was the only thing available on short notice. It is nicely packaged and a box goes a long way. It has a bit more small/fine pieces than I would like, but overall, it is a decent product.

I am not going to give them any less than 3 stars, because part of this is on me. However, I bought a box of hay from this company and it states it covers 75 square feet. I thought the box was a joke when I received it. If you are using for a very light covering of flowers or something, this might be perfect, but for avid vegetable farmers and gardeners, I would suggest weighing the cost and how much you really can use in such a small box. Truthfully, this box only covered 6 of my 50 plants that I will need this for. For over $40, this is way too much to pay for so little coverage. I cannot put a very thin layer when surrounding veggies. You need a couple of layers to keep the weeds down long enough to grow and mature your veggies. If you're like me, look for local farmers with organic straw. I paid $5-10 per bail, which equals multiple, multiple boxes of this companies straw boxes at around $42. I now know how this works, but it just seems deceptive for first time buyers.

Works great but if you are trying to use them for your strawberries. Perhaps a shredded mulched version will be best. This one was kinda hard to work with. Then I saw a gardener on YouTube and realized my problem… it wasn’t smaller blended pieces. They were long and a bit awkward to work with. None the less this was my fault for not being more vigilant on what experts used lol. Nothing wrong with the product. Organic and great quality and dare I say.. smells great lol. Even my chihuahua likes it. But keep in mind what you are using it for.

Works great as garden mulch. Very little seed sprouting.

This straw is long pieces that, if you want to use in garden beds or something, you will want to break up. It works but it had a bunch of seeds in.

Used for all plants in pots to help keep moisture in since summer has been so hot. Also using it in my raised beds since it is also good for the soil when it decomposes. First time trying this instead of regular straw from hardware store. More expensive but better product.

Disappointed with this product basically paid for weeds and lost time in the garden. Took time to shake out the straw before adding to our beds which we just built in our new home that are filled with 5 cubic yds of amazing compost(now new compost that did not have weeds, does). The beds were basically weed free for the first 6 weeks until I got around to ordering this. After just a few days of the straw being on them, weeds are everywhere!! Made the decision to remove so a complete waste, contaminated the compost and will take about 4-5 hours to remove and weed.

Last few years I used coco coir for mulch and really felt that my plants didn’t fair to well. I’m trying hay and immediately liked the results! I can see my plants very well, the soil retained moisture and it looks neat. The hay was well packaged and clean ( a few clumps). I read the page instructions and did a little shake before mulching to rid the hay of any seeds.
