What is the hole occluder?

A hole occluder is an opaque disk with one or more small holes through it, used by ophthalmologists, orthoptists and optometrists to test visual acuity. The occluder is a simple way to focus light, as in a hole camera, temporarily removing the effects of refractive errors such as myopia. Because light passes only through the center of the eye's lens, defects in the shape of the lens (errors of refraction) have no effect while the occluder is used.

What does the hole occluder do?

The ophthalmologist, orthoptist or optometrist can estimate the maximum improvement in a patient's vision that can be attained by lenses to correct errors of refraction. This can be used to distinguish visual defects caused by refractive error, which improve when the occluder is used, from other problems, which do not. The hole occluder can also be used in testing visual acuity in mydriatic patients. In this case the hole occluder compensates for the inability to contract the iris assisting the eye in obtaining a retinal projection similar to that of a non-cycloplegic eye.

How to use?

Squinting and looking through a tiny hole made with a finger works similarly to a hole occluder, by blocking light through the outer parts of the eye's lens. An improvised pinhole has a similar but better effect. The same principle has also been applied as an alternative to corrective lenses: a screen of holes is mounted on an eyeglass frame and worn as hole glasses.

After cataract surgery, seeing words and charts on TV was not very clear. Since I usually see better when looking through the pinholes with the occluded when getting examined at the optometrist, I decided to try these. It definitely improved what I could now read on my TV.

We conduct medical examinations, which include the Snellin eye chart. This tool is used for an eye test. It is a good quality and works as expected. Can’t beat the price so I recommend it highly.

Unless you have experienced this, you are unlikely to believe how much of an effect this can have on poor vision. Now in my '70's, my previously very good vision has declined so that I needed reading glasses; and then sadly my longer distance vision began to blur. I was unable to read subtitles on TV. The optometrist did various tests with lenses and the like, and then got me to use one of these. The image immediately became sharp, clear and undulled. Now these guys sit beside me, when I watch TV. Everything is crystal clear.

I had recent cataract surgery. It went well but, due to a previous radial keratotomy my post op visual acuity was not as good as I had hoped. I ordered a Snellen eye chart and this pinhole occluder from Amazon. I discovered that, with the occluder I could read the 20/20 line well and all but one letter on the 20/16 line. This gives me confidence that, with corrective lenses, I should be able to have at least 20/20 vision. The occluder was easy to use and, unlike some other reviewers, I found that the holes in the occluder were fine for me. Good value and relieved my anxiety that I might not be able to see well, even with glasses. I recommend it.
