  • RESTORE YOUR BARREL: Barrels used for wine or other low alcohol spirits or cocktails should be renewed after each aging cycle. Whiskey, Bourbon and other high proof liquors require less maintenance.
  • SWISH BARREL RESTORATION KIT: After 2 or 3 uses, or if you want to neutralize the flavor from previous batches, follow the step by step instructions on how to use.
  • STORING BETWEEN USES: Wood oak barrels should always have liquid in them must be stored in a water solution including a storing tablet.
  • Dissolve the storing tablets in a glass of water (preferably hot water). Pour the solution into the oak aging barrel using the funnel included and top off with hot water. Each month, continue topping off to keep the barrel filled and fully hydrated.
  • For more barrel maintenance accessories and charred oak barrels for aging, visit the Thousand Oaks Barrel Co. Amazon Storefront page.

Barrels used for wine or other low alcohol spirit should be cleaned after each use. Tequila, Whiskey or other high alcohol content spirits require cleaning on a less frequent cycle. Always clean your barrel when moving from one spirit to another. The kit includes everything you need to clean, neutralize, and sterilize your barrel for re-use or storage. Included: 1oz Barrel-Kleen 1oz Barrel Neutralizing Acid 2 Campden Sterilizing Tablets Instructions: 1) Dissolve the Barrel-Kleen into 2.5 U.S. gallon of warm water. Fill the barrel with this cleaning solution and soak for 24 hours. Empty and rinse 3 times with hot water. 2) Dissolve the Neutralizing Acid into 2.5 gallon of warm water. Fill the barrel with this neutralizing solution and soak for 15 minutes. Empty and rinse the barrel 3 times with hot water. 3) To re-char the barrel interior, drain the barrel for 3 hours. Place a butane torch in the bung and spigot hole and re-char the inside. 4) When storing the barrel or prior to re-use, dissolve the 2 sterilizing tablets in 1 gallon of cool water. Fill the barrel with the solution. Swish around for a few minutes and rinse 3 times with hot water. To prevent the barrel from drying out and minimize the possibility of contamination, barrels should always be stored full with spirits or sterilizing solution. Barrels left without liquid will dry out!

I ordered just the storing tablets previously & had a packet of several that lasted a long time. Paid more for this "kit" and there are only 3 tablets. And worse, the tablets were crushed upon arrival so I really just have chunks & powder that I now have to measure out by hand.

A must have for repeated use on mini barrels. I use the kit every three or four batches in my mini barrel to keep it fresh.

I cleaned out a 3 liter oak barrel used to age scotch before changing over to age rum and am glad I did after seeing all the crud (technical term for loose charcoal, wood bits, and biology projects) that were there. No taste or odors imparted after using this so I'm saying, get it and use it.
