About this item

  • SAWbird+ 2m is a self-contained LNA module designed for 2-meter ham band applications
  • The module uses 2 ultra-low-noise LNAs and a custom high-performance SAW filter centered at the frequency of 145MHz (142-148MHz)
  • SAWbird+ 2m can be powered in 3 ways: via bias tee (with a current capability of 200mA or higher), through the on-board microUSB connector, or through the on-board female header
  • Though compatible with most SDRs, we recommend using the module in conjunction with NESDR SMArTee (available on Amazon, product ID B079C4S2BT)
  • Full 1 year service and support directly through Nooelec!

SAWbird+ 2m is a self-contained LNA module designed for operating within the 2-meter band. It has a very high attenuation outside of its 6MHz passband (142-148MHz), centered around 145MHz, with a nominal gain of 40dB within the passband and a nominal current draw of ~200mA.

SAWbird+ 2m contains 2 ultra-low-noise LNAs sandwiched around a custom-designed, high-performance SAW filter centered at the frequency of interest. The SAWbird+ 2m has an EMI shield to isolate the internals from external interference. There are also M3 mounting holes available to mount the PCB in your custom enclosure or project with standard hardware.

Each module allows for 3 different power options, but you should only power with one option at any given time! The recommended power input through the SMA output port (for bias-tee capable SDRs like the NESDR SMArTee) is 3V-5V DC. Alternatively, if you don't have a bias-tee capable SDR, you can use the external power options through the microUSB port or the power input header (female 0.1" header). The recommended external power input is 3.3V-5.5V DC.

Though there is protection circuitry on SAWbird+ 2m for overvoltage conditions, and voltages of up to 12V DC should still work and will not damage the device, it is not recommended for long-term usage.

I got this for the 2 meter bands as I am getting my ham license, and all the radio stuff I want to use, and it seems to work well enough as a buddy was using it with his setup and the filter definitely helped, as well as the gain in the signal. No complaints, it is exactly what it says, the RF SMA connectors work fine, and the USB connector for power is good also.

I submitted this LNA to the Central States VHF Society 2024 Conference LNA Noise Figure Measurement Lab for testing. It measured 0.65 dB noise figure and 41 dB gain. I use it in my ham shack with an attenuator to reduce the gain. It works great.

I use this with a HackRF One to do monitoring on and around the 2M ham bands and experiment with decoding digital modes. The combination of LNA and SAW filter does a decent job of boosting the signals I want to see while eliminating surrounding noise.

I found it incompatible with the latest version of NooElec Mini V2 SDR without a DC break, even though the LaNA module is compatible. This messed up my plans somewhat.
