About this item

  • Nitinol isn't just wire – its unique shape memory means it snaps back to its original shape when heated to 40°C (104°F). Just add a bit of hot water, and watch it spring to life.
  • Our wires are designed to activate at a temperature (104F) that won’t burn your fingers, making it perfect for science classes, engineering demos, and curious tinkerers alike.
  • Featuring a smooth low-friciton black oxide coating, this nitinol wire looks as great as it performs.
  • Our wires are pre-trained into a straight line, ensuring they're ready to use right out of the box — no additional training or heat treatment required.
  • At room temperature, our nitinol wire is ultra-flexible, allowing you to bend it into a new shape before activating it.

Professor Tony's Bad Ass Wire brings you premium Nitinol engineered for those who need reliable affordable nitinol for technical or creative projects. Perfect for research, science classrooms, DIY tinkerers, and ambitious experiments. Our wire is designed with safety in mind, activating at human-safe temperatures (40°C/104°F). This 40°C variant springs to life in hot water, making it an excellent choice for classrooms, labs, or home experiments. It’s pre-trained, polished, and comes with an ultra-smooth black oxide finish — ready to be bent, shaped, and retrained into any shape you imagine. IMPORTANT: Nitinol is an engineering material, not a toy. Handle with care. →MAGIC MATERIALS COMPANY brings you inspiration through materials! I used this for SMA whip antennas on wireless mic packs. Not great for people if you are trying to hide the mic. YOU CAN'T KEEP THIS WIRE DOWN!

This is super fun to play around with. It's trained to 'straight' by default, but you can train it into basically whatever shape you can fix it into securely, but there are no instructions in the box (or on the product page, as of this writing) for how to retrain/set the shape. Basically, you have to secure it in whatever shape you want, then heat it sufficiently to lock that shape in, then cool it fully. I used nails to create a star and wrapped the wire around the posts as tightly as I could, then heated it up with a butane torch until it glowed slightly, then cooled it under water. I could then straighten it out or mess it up however I wanted, and when heated sufficiently, it would work its way back to the star, ish - how quickly it 'moved' depended mostly on the distribution of the heat I think - using a heat gun, it was rather slow as I had to move it around, but putting it in 'hot' (but still finger-safe, actually) water and it would snap back pretty quickly (as all structures were trying to realign at the same time). I also have to get the appropriate set/reset temperatures dialed in better, as I *think* I was using too warm of water for the 'reset' effect and it would move toward the star shape but stop short, and I think it's because it was sorta getting partially set in the interim position. More science needed, but all the people I showed it to thought it was super cool.

This came rolled up. Thickness and color are as described. Easily bent at room temperature. Running hot tap water (~45C) over it caused it to straighten quickly.Recommended.

Bends easily in cold water and pops right back to straight when I use my mappro torch on it. Delightful.

Packaging for the product was nice, felt like quality. The actual nitinol itself was great, the temperature range claimed was accurate within the tolerance listed. The material was able to deform and reform several times without seeming to suffer any issues. And was able to hold its memory shape quite well. Would highly recommend this product for anyone looking to use nitinol for a project!
