What a lens. Fast, sharp and responsive. It’s the gift that keeps on giving. I use this more than any other lens. It’s not just for good bird pictures although that’s what my original purpose was in buying the lens. It’s a stellar tool to make part of your NikonZ lens series.

using with my nikon z8. i haven’t had much opportunity to take it out yet, but was able to get a few shots from the 4th, and have tested it out around my apartment a bit. i prefer using it in manual focus most of the time.i’ve been doing photography for a while, sometimes professionally, but rarely have been able to shoot photos that don’t end up taking a lot of time to edit (my last camera was the canon eos m50 which i probably bought a year or two after release as my first nice, not hand me down camera, but it wasn’t really what i needed for the type of photography i do now). this lens is easy to work with, and i haven’t had to edit any of the photos i’ve taken so far (all of the ones above are only with color filters that my z8 had pre-installed).the downside to this lens is the weight is significant. i’m not sure what the actual weight is, but it is a wrist-killer. i expected this though with the length and material of the lens. the cost is the other downside, but if you can afford to do it or save for it, it’s an amazing tool.

NIKON NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 S Telephoto Zoom Lens for Nikon Z Mirrorless CamerasPreamble: When buying this lens through Amazon, be sure to check which seller you purchase from. If you want a Canadian warranty, be sure to buy from a Nikon-Canada authorized reseller.Having shot a variety of image formats over the course of decades, while I appreciate there's a time and a place where any camera is better than no picture at all, I have become fussy about my cameras and my choice of optics. While there are no bad cameras being made currently nor are there any bad lenses beyond a very low price point, there is still a difference between 'good' optics and exceptional ones. The Z 70-200mm f/2.8 S is one of the exceptional ones. There are numerous reviews out there that quantify lens performance at various focal lengths and apertures. While I can't provide MTF scores, I can say this is a lens with surprisingly few weaknesses. Now, you might be surprised when I infer there are weaknesses but, before I address them, let me just say that there's no lens I know of in this category that gets more 'out of the way' in the course of shooting than this one. In other words, the lens has design features that help me get the shot I want without having to remember a sequence of steps to get there: It just does it (within its very generous design parameters).Hits:- Sharpness across the field of view through the focal range and range of apertures- Weight (for this category of lens)- Fast focus- Constant aperture (of course)- Flare resistant coatings- Usable with Z teleconverters- 77mm filter size- Focus breathing: Not an issue- Assignable function buttons (Fn1 & Fn2)- Functions assignable to Control ring (default: aperture)- Close focus distance varies with the focal length so you can get surprisingly close to your subject at the full range of focal lengths. This is fantastic!Misses?- Effective focal length at MFD, that is to say, at closest focus distance (aka minimum focus distance: MFD), the lens provides less magnification at a given focal length than the focal length should provide. At longer distance, the lens performs at its given focal length so no worries there. This feature plays a role in the lens not exhibiting focus breathing so the effect is for the greater good overall.- Tripod foot: Not fully removable.- Felt lined hood: This is a hit and a miss. Sure, it cuts down on unwanted reflections but it also gives dust and debris a place to stay put. They could have just molded little little plastic baffles instead or just left the interior of the hood 'matte'.- No VR switch (but easy to find as a menu item)- Focus ring is easy to turn accidentally. (Can be moved/ reassigned, however re: CSM settings)I have a range of prime and zoom lenses. While the Z 70-200mm won't replace all of them that overlap its range -- such as my 135mm f/1.8 Art lens -- it is the most versatile 70-200mm I have ever seen. Because of that versatility, it's a lens I will use much more often.Nikon has made many f/2.8 telephoto zooms (70/80-200mm). The current F-mount Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8E is worth considering if you still have both feet firmly planted in both F and Z mounts. On the other hand, if you see yourself migrating to Z and have a Z camera, I'd recommend just going straight to this option. It's a few bucks more but you won't look back for quite a long time.

Built like a tank.Sharp as a tack.Super fast focus.Almost no lens flair when shooting into the sun.Consistent, quality results no matter the lighting or conditions. You can buy a 3rd party lens for cheaper, and on paper it may rival the stats of this lens. But when you need a lens that will deliver in any lighting or weather conditions, that's when you'll start kicking yourself for not spending the extra money on the Nikon. As a professional photographer, you have to deliver no matter what the conditions, and often times you go to shoots in places you've never been and in conditions that are way less than ideal. These factors are bad enough, but when you have to make adjustments to your creativity because the equipment isn't up to the task, then that makes the job far more difficult, if not impossible. And once your equipment lets you down, you'll always feel a little apprehensive on your next shoot, especially if its in an unknown remote location. So, my recommendation would be to spend the extra money on this lens, its worth every penny and the results will speak for itself.

I always hesitated to get a 70-200 2.8 zoom for DSLR given its size and weight. Nikon's Z6 is much lighter than DSLR and thus decided to pair it with 2.8 zooms. 24-70 2.8 S was the reason I moved into Nikon mirrorless, and has been the only lens on Z6 since day one. After long wait, 70-200 2.8 S finally become available. In short, this is another excellent lens from Nikon S family. I don't mind it is made in Thailand and it comes with USA warranty card in the box. I have discovered in the past that the larger lens (i.e. 85mm 1.4g, 24 1.4g) have smoother, more transparent and more vivid color rendering than 50mm 1.8g lens, which is razor sharp. The 24-70 2.8 S and this new 70-200 2.8 S have the picture characters similar to 1.4g lens, very smooth, extremely transparent, vivid but not overly do so, and noticeably sharper across the frame when fully open, plus no purple fringes! As expected, this lens can produce some eye-catching creamy blurry background. I love Nikon's color science (I will never part with my D700 and 105DC) and the way lens was designed. Similar to 24-70 2.8 S, the picture quality of this 70-200 2.8 S + Z6 is a bit artistic than just perfect / matter of fact. Autofocus is even snappier than 24-70 2.8 S in picture mode, similarly quiet in video mode. This lens can focus very responsively with Z6 loaded with latest firmware. It feels like Z6 might not tap into its full autofocusing capability yet. I found myself using the close focus 0.5m at 70mm a lot more than I thought I would, especially indoors. I like the 2nd functional button and out of factory the 2nd functional buttons are assigned as AF-On, but can be changed to other functions such as tracking on-off. It is well balanced on Z6, I decided to remove battery grip to reduce weight, since the bulk of weight is the lens itself, however, I will likely to keep tripod collar on the lens. I will hold the tripod collar in my left hand and this will form very good support to the lens + camera. Also with tripod collar, my finger tips will comfortably land near the zoom ring and 2nd function buttons. The collar has smooth contour and I suspect that was the design intent for hand held. The Zoom ring and focus ring are well damped and responsive, even under freezing temperature. I like the fact that the lens won't extend in and out, though it comes with cost of being long and heavy. Test briefly I didn't notice any obvious focus breathing, which is very nice. However, the lens will need minor re-focusing after changing the focus length. Since I usually will confirm the focus before taking pictures, this won't be an issue. I rearranged the inside of think tank retrospective 20 V2.0 bag to place 70-200 S + Z6 diagonally, thus the long lens can fit in better and can also be taken in and out easily. The overall weight of this combo + bag is bearable. One more thing, VR works well for non-moving subject hand held, I can get sharp photo at 200mm with shutter speed of 1/6. I think the camera knows if on tripod and will adjust VR accordingly, thus I rarely touch the IBIS setting, always leave it on. This lens has recessed glass element near camera end and thus can accepts Z teleconverter. There are reviews about the new Z x1.4 stating that it won't sacrificing much focus speed / accuracy and picture quality, may consider adding one in the future. Compared to the short tele primes that I own, this lens provides more flexibility for composition and also faster autofocusing to capture the moment. In summary, this is lens that can provide years of extraordinary and reliable service in the field. Very pleased with the purchase from Amazon.com directly.
