It’s large and sits on camera’s hotshoe with no problems. Cable wire route to camera’s plug is somewhat cumbersome.

Who would have thought an iPhone or IPad could capture such incredible sound quality? It’s the mic! Love it!

I bought this because the generic one I bought did not work. As soon as I plugged this into my camera it did its job. Don't by generics, buy the name brand. Remember, you get what you pay for. With this, I got what I wanted and needed. Definitely recommend.

Trying to eliminate the noise from my auto focus and this does a poor job for the price.I bought this microphone for my D3300 with the kit lenses. When I could still easily hear the auto focus, I bought a 55-300 lens thinking the kit lenses were the issue; still have a lot of noise in my video recording. This is the only mic sold by Nikon for this camera.

I ordered the ME-1 because I wanted an option of not using the built in microphone for videos. I used it on my Coolpix P7700 and D7100. The ME-1 is light, something important to me and very good. I used it a few days ago for the first time for a few video interview clips. It worked as is supposed to and I didn't even know how to use it. I picked it out of the box and went out. It might not be a pro level mic, but I don't do pro level videos either. But I recorded in a windy environment and the wind was muffled by the wind screen very well.I like the fact that it's light and easy to use, and not cumbersome at all. It's all I needed. The soft case is very convenient too.I would definitely recommend this product to my friends.

I had looked at other mics that looked neat but were cheaper, but found they were poor quality, too large /bulky and sent them back. This is for a Nikon D5000 dslr, and gets it's power from the camera battery. It is not a shotgun high directional mic which I did not need, but more an all purpose. I could see it also working with several camcorders as long as they have a 3.5 mic in jack. I just tested it on an old RR engine going right by me and there was no distortion, and a nice full stereo sound. (I had the low cut switch on good due to low rumble of the RR engine--also good for windy areas) I have not tried it in strong wind yet and would probably need an additional wind screen as all mics usually do in such situations.I especially like the fact it fits in my small camera case. (LowePro Nova 160) as well as an additional lens. It also practically eliminates auto focus noise (coming from the motor and lens moving) that the built in mic will pick up (not noticeable in most active outdoor shots with ambient background noise or ie -the train, traffic, water, etc). You will get some focus motor sounds if the area you are recording is a quiet room etc, I suggest turning off the auto focus if doing a recording of a speaker or anything else auto focus would not be needed)All in all - a very good performing accessory that does not pretend to be anything else and nicely constructed (quality plastic material). If you are planning to record voices from a distance ie- tv reporter, plays, wedding, then using a wireless lapel mic or hooking up to sound board is suggested.

I really like the Nikon D5100 camera I purchased last year. It takes great video, however, the sound of the 'auto focus' being recorded was really bad.The Nikon ME-1 has solved that problem for me. It has removed as much as 95 percent of the noise of auto focus. You really have to listen carefully to notice any noise at all. As well the overall sound quality has improved also.Yes, I am satisfied with my purchase of the ME-1. An extra bonus was the price was much less than I would have paid at the local photo store.

We all know that the built-in mic in any camera is extremely limited. It can be adequate for general day-in-the-life video like a party or similar activity, but if you want better quality audio then you need a better microphone. There are several ways you can go, and knowing what kind of video you intend to shoot most often and how you want it to sound is an important first step in selecting a mic. This mic is the type usually referred to as a "shotgun mic". It is designed to pick up sound from all directions - but focusing primarily on direct front. In other words, if you were recording at a party - the person(s) speaking directly in front of the camera (and mic) would be the primary audio, but other ambient sounds would also be recorded - like people off to the side and even behind the camera. But the ones "in front" have the most volume and clarity. This mic is stereo, which is nice because those ambient sounds from left and right will be recorded in stereo and sound much more natural. This also helps the ear focus on the direct front audio. It really helps to give the video some "audio depth".The mic is designed to ride in the hot shoe of the camera (though it is a cold device and does not use any power from the hot shoe), and tightens via a locking ring, just like a flash or similar. The cord is just about perfect in length. Short enough to be easy to manage and out of the way, but long enough that it should reach the connection with virtually any camera. There is even a little notch in the mic stand that will pinch the cord into place and help prevent it flopping around. I find that looping the cord once, around the stand - then plugging it in, is perfect and keeps it out of the way. I very much like that the connection is a 90-degree plug, which also helps keep it out of the way.The mic can also be adjusted on a swivel that moves it up and down, but only in a limited way. You can position the mic to "aim" upward or straight forward, or any angle in between. But you cannot aim it side to side. This would be a nice improvement to make. The mic includes a switch that alternates between "Flat" and "L-Clip". Flat is the general setting to use most of the time. L-Clip will help to reduce the buffeting noise of wind, and will also help reduce clipping when recording very loud sounds such as live rock music, etc. For any additional sensitivity settings, you must rely on the camera's functions. The foam windscreen is nice, and will help to prevent some of the "pops" that can occur with close up or loud audio. There is also an optional dead-cat type wind reducer available.I have used this mic in several difficult and trying recordings already. One was an outdoor rally setting with loud speakers and crowd noise, in which the loud speakers were aimed away from my position, putting me in a dead spot. I raised the mic to about a 45 degree angle, and it did a pretty good job of capturing the audio of the speakers. I have also used it for recording live music, and it did a good job. For normal speaking, indoors, I find that it is effective up to about 10 feet or so. After that, you will greatly loose volume. For it's designed purpose, I like the ME-1 and will use it regularly. It is a huge plus that it does not require its own power source. No batteries to worry about, ever. Just keep in in the bag, and attach when needed. You could even use an extension cable and boom to move the mic closer to the subject if necessary. I have not tried that yet.Expensive, but still a good value I think.

I was recommended this microphone from a distinguished professional in the video field specifically because it is bus-powered. I used to use a VideoMic by Rode, but I would sometimes forget to turn on the microphone, and it's quite bulky on top of a DSLR.I've been using this with my D7000 for about 3 weeks now and it's been excellent. The sound quality is much better than the in-camera microphone: soft, crisp and clear without much noise at all. Of course I use this as backup. External audio capture devices, such as the Zoom H1 I use, is well worth the extra work involved to get even better sound. But for better in-camera audio, you can't beat this thing!Ben
