If you're someone who doesn't regularly go in for proactive car maintenance you can sometimes forget that your brake fluid isn't supposed to last forever. Even during brake pad changes how much of the fluid is changed depends entirely on the method the shop uses to bleed your brakes. If they're efficient they hardly need anything.Brake fluid is hydroscopic so it absorbs water over overtime. This can lead to long-term problems that you don't want to have happened to your vehicle. You should really replace your brake fluid at some interval, normally at a major service event would be the most convenient if you have to replace calipers or things of that nature anyway. I try to replace my brake fluid every 6 to 7 years as I live in a very wet climate so a lot of opportunity for the brake fluid to absorb water.Probably not the most useful thing if you only have one vehicle although it is cheap. But if you have a family of vehicles this can be something that just takes 10 minutes if all the vehicles are unlocked with their hoods open that's easy to do and write in some kind of logbook.Technically since it's calibrated for a couple different brake fluid fluid standards it may also serve you well with other devices that use a similar hydraulic fluid. But I can't speak to that directly.

Il tester per il liquido dei freni arriva in una scatola di cartone, ben protetto, insieme alla due pile ministilo (AAA) e al piccolo manuale multilingue (lingua italiana inclusa).Questo strumento rileva la percentuale di umidità presente nell’olio dei freni. Tale valore è importante poiché la temperatura di ebollizione del liquido dei freni (compresa tra 230 e i 280°C) si abbassa drasticamente con la presenza dell’acqua (che viene assorbita dall’umidità dell’aria), per cui quando supera il 3% compromette l’efficienza dell’impianto frenante.L’uso è semplicissimo: inserite le batterie fornite, si accende agendo sul tasto di accensione e l’unico parametro da impostare è il tipo di olio freni (lo trovate sul manuale di uso e manutenzione dell’auto) DOT3/DOT4/DOT5.1, quindi basta immergere completamente i due elettrodi metallici nel serbatoio dell’olio e lo strumento fornisce il valore % del contenuto di acqua. Realising this is a much cheaper way of checking water content than recommended by brake fluid manufacturers, I gave it a try. Whilst its % of water may not be wholly accurate it gave a fair reading between newly opened brake fluid and 3 year old brake fluid. Good enough for me, thanks.

This is a nice brake fluid tester. If you are a DIY mechanic this is a nice tool to have to check the condition of your brake fluid. This tester is very easy to use and it will quickly tell you the condition of your brake fluid. I like that it has a backlight on the LCD screen making it easy to read.

We got this for our son, who helps build ground support vehicles for airlines, and also enjoys working on his car, and helps his friends with theirs. He stated that in his opinion, it’s very well suited for the average person who doesn’t deal with vehicles much [such as myself] to see if their brake fluid is still good. Testing it on our car, it detected that the fluid was in good condition, and the backlight lit up green as expected. So, it worked well, seems built to last a long time, and I’m glad to have another very useful tool in my box.
