Had problems first few tapes. Issue was the tape would not keep tension after inserting in the adapter and then trying to play in VCR. You could see the VCR tracking icon come up on the screen and then the tape would stop. The sometimes when you would try to eject the adapter, the VHS-C tape would not be fully retracted into the adapter and become stuck in the VCR.Fix - While troubleshooting, I could hear that the gears inside the adapter didn't sound quite right. The VHS-C actual tape would not fully retract into its own case. The adapter was closing the door of the VHS-C tape before the magnetic tape was fully retracted and then opening its own lid.I took all of the small screws off the back of the adapter and then reinserted and hand tightened. I was not able to remove the back plate as there is some type of plastic tab keeping it in place but I was able to lift the sides and see the gears. Once reinstalled, the gears sound like they were engaging the entire time. This meant that the magnetic portion of the VHS-C tape was fully retracted into it's own case before the adapter opened the door.Note - all of the very small screws are not the same length so you have to note exactly where they were removed from.Since the fix, I have digitized approximately 20 VHS-C tapes with absolutely no issues.

High standard quality compared to others I have used or seen. My original adaptor was purchased with the video recorder and must have been around year 1992 and lasted all this time. Only broke when it was damaged when moving furniture. I bought two cheaper versions in one year as they were all I could find, and they were cheaply made and also caused tape damage. I found this Panasonic adaptor on Amazon, and it was a bit more expensive but well worth the extra. Same quality as the original I had from a different brand. The other two are in reserve but probably will never use.

While it comes with no directions, they really are not needed. The battery location is easily recognized and it's obvious that you need to insert an AA, with the negative end on the spring & therefore the positive end pointing in the other direction. Then looking down you see a little plastic tab with serrations --- oh! what happens when I move that to the right? Aha, the motor starts making noise and the little plastic door opens, revealing a hole shaped like a VHS-C cassette --- wonder what happens if I put my tape in this hole --- by golly it fits, I bet if I close little plastic door something will happen --- yep, the motor makes some more noise & stops. Putting this in my vcr, & hitting play, it starts. So who needed those directions anyway. In the last day since receiving the adapter, I've run half of a 60 cassette order with absolutely no difficulty. There are a couple of holes in the bottom large enough to poke your fingers into to help push the tape out of the adapter when you're ready to take the tape out. Be sure to seat the tape well when loading to be certain it's all the way in before closing the plastic door. When opening, it's probably a good practice to cushion the plastic door to ease it open rather than having it sharply snap open and risk getting it angry. Bottom line, don't force anything, treat it gently and it should last for a long time.

Despite my misgivings (and a lot of questionable reviews about this type of product) i went ahead and purchased this odd motorized device to see if i could use it to transfer about 30 old VHS-C tapes to my Mac. I was using an old borrowed VHS and had some problems initially with the video not showing up and then the quality being lousy. With all the variables it took a while for me to figure things out. Turns out I had to try a couple of video capture devices before i found one that worked well (elgato video capture on amazon) and then i had to watch a few Youtube videos and figure out how to clean the VCR heads (made a BIG difference). And also had to watch a youtube video to make sure i was loading the VHS-C tape correctly. But after all of that, this adapter turns out to work very well. Trick is to make sure there is no slack in the tape (manually turn tape to tighten) before you insert it into the VCR. Hit rewind to make sure tape is rewound and tight. I've had zero problems playing the tapes. I did have to clean the heads a second time because apparently the tapes were funky (or i didn't get them properly cleaned the first time) But the adapter has worked like a champ. Highly recommend it if you are one of those folks that went down the VHS-C path. Enjoy.

Working good so far. Had some issues getting the battery cover back on after inserting a new battery but it's a minor issue & doesn't affect how it works at all. I've seen some reviews say the item seems flimsy or rickety, etc. This is how these VHS-C adapters really were made. I bought a JVC movie camera in late 1988, also got 2 of these tape adapters back then when I bought the camera. The last of the two died on me about a year & a half ago after working for about 27 years (long time in tech world). When it was brand new it was flimsy and somewhat lightweight & seemed cheaply made BUT that's the way they are/were, that's how they were made. It doesn't really affect how it works. Over the years that I had it there were some minor issues with it but I was always able to watch home videos without incident. This product that I purchased and received last week works just like the ones I bought years ago. Looks the same, acts the same and has the same little quirks that the other ones had minus the battery cover issue, which is insignificant and minor. It is made for tiny VHS-C tapes, I used the tapes with a small JVC camera from 1988 until 1996 when the camera itself died. I continued to use the tape adapters to watch the videos for the next 9 or so years. You have to press down on the tape to insert it, it can sometimes be tricky, nothing new it was like this years ago too with my older adapters, it might seem at first as if it won't fit but you have to press down until you hear a click or pop sometimes. When the lid is closed you can see & hear the rollers go up and pull the tape, it might sound flimsy but it's supposed to be that way, always was. One thing to remember, if your AA battery is not brand spanking new the rollers and functionality might seem very slow, it's not the adapter causing the problem, it's your battery. A brand new battery will make the difference, the adapter responds to how good the battery is. This item showed up in good condition, works good, I'm satisfied with it. I've used it to watch about maybe 12 videos so far, I have a box of a little over 50 tapes and I have no concerns that there will be any issues. I have not had it eat up any tapes or destroy any videos, usually when that happens it's a VCR issue. If the rollers stop moving after you inserted the tape, or seem slow moving, try putting a new battery in it. If anything happens in the future I will update but I have doubts there will be a problem. Like I said, I had two of these & they both lasted over two decades before dying, they might seem rickety but they do the job. I had a hard time finding this in person at any store, I might be buying a second one in the future if I don't transfer videos over. It takes 1 AA battery in the side compartment. Again, no issues, works fine.
