Excellent product, just as described and plug and play..easy to install in minutes and does the job. So a little background: VERY COMMON PROBLEM ON FORD RANGER 4X4 SYSTEMS- if you have a battery failure, your 4WD system will go out. That's because this little box, the 4x4 control module, for some reason commonly fails upon battery failure. The way to tell: When you try to switch into 4WD (H or L), it won't work...so you think it's the 4x4 system? To check: When you turn the key in ignition to Accessory mode (without turning the truck on), you will see a bunch of dash lights illuminate. NOT THE 4WD...that's normal. However when you turn the truck on, the 4WD lights will illuminate for a split second (only when you turn on the truck). If these lights don't come on and your 4x4 system doesn't work...did you have a battery failure recently? Have you replaced the battery? Yup...sorry to say, your 4x4CM is fried. Buy this and plug it in...it's located in the lower passenger kick panel (remove panel and use small socket to remove the two small nuts), unplug old unit and plug this one in...turn on truck and the 4WD lights will work...VOILA, your 4x4 system is fixed...saving you hundreds in hard earned savings not having to go to the Ford dealer nor the mechanic! (You're welcome). PS, my Ranger was a 2002 but this works on any 1996 thru 2011 4x4 system). Make sure you buy the correct unit for yours (1998 and older are Rangers use a different CM than the newer ones).

Had no four wheel drive, no lights, sounds, nothing. Motor was replaced last year, then this year it stopped working again. Replaced module and right now everything is perfect. For those that have a Ford 2001 era, the sequence of events are as follows...… the module feeds the resistor switch on the dash all the time. When switch is activated, the module tells the motor on the transfer case to engage 4x4, then the motor puts it in 4x4 and sends a signal back to the module that the truck is in 4x4 either high or low, the module turns on the correct dash indicator light. Frankly, what we really need is a lever on the floor that mechanically will put this in 4x4 without changing out the transfer case and eliminate all the electronics.....like the good old days.

My first clue that there was an issue was the OD off light blinking (didn't know what that meant). But then I found the 4wd switch had no lights and didn't change state when switched. I thought it was the motor (transfer case) so tried replacing it and found the new one didn't change anything (previously replaced one in a 1991 Explorer that fixed it). Ordered and installed this module and everything started working. The big clue, when discovered, was the lack of the indicator lite not momentarily coming on when the key is first set to run (along with the other dash indicator lights). This pickup (2001 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4) was an auction purchase that I desired to make into a daily driver. Living now in Utah (Ogden area) I wanted a vehicle with a working 4x4 ability. At 178k miles I just like these vehicles at less than $3k invested (not including new tires).

Item arrived today. I have 4X4 working again. To others that 4X4 has stopped working. Watch your dash lights for 4 wheel drive,if they don't light up for a brief second when you start your vehicle this module is the problem. Ofcourse check all your fuses first! Apparently if you disconnect your battery for what ever reason and re-connect it,it fries the module. This newer revision module has been fixed to avoid this happening again. Shame on ford for not doing a recall on this part. It could be a serious safety issue! I will be calling Ford to file a complaint! This price was also excellent,Ford wants almost twice as much.

I own a 2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. My control module I had on my truck stopped working. I would try to go into 4x4 high and it would not engage or click. The light on my dash would not turn on. I could get away with this issue by unplugging the control module and plugging it back in a few seconds and then the control module would start working. This worked for about 4 months. The other day I tried this fix and it id not work. I pulled the trigger and bought a new one. My old unit ended in AD, this new one ended in AE and everything works just fine. Very easy to install and uninstall. If you can unplug 2 cables you can do this install yourself. I think I just needed a common screwdriver to take old unit off.

Purchased to fix the failed 4WD in my 2002 Mazda B4000 (Ford Ranger clone). This item was less than half the price my local Mazda dealer wanted for a new module, and within a couple of dollars of the price a junkyard wanted for a used one that had been pulled from a wrecked Ranger. It took me about 5 minutes to remove the old one, and another 5 minutes to install the replacement. Now 4WD is functioning again.I'd like to give it 5 stars, but taking one star off for the weird description ("Automatic Transmission Modulator" ???) that made it difficult to find on amazon.com

Just bought a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport. I knew the 4 wheel drive was not working. Did some research, found out the 4x4cm ( control module), located under passenger side kick panel, was a common problem on these vehicles. I was not getting the 4hi/lo indicator lights on the dash, momentarily lighting up when you first start the truck, also should stay light when in 4x4. No clicking sound, from the control module, when enabling 4 wheel drive hi/lo, which you should hear on the passenger side. Long story short, replaced in about 10 mins, with negative battery cable unplugged, works like a champ now. The unit that came out of my truck was labeled, 1L54-7H417-AC 4x4cm, this unit was labeled 1L54-7H417-AE 4x4cm. No problems, it cross-referenced correctly. Also, picture shown is not correct, you do receive the correct part when ordered. Here are some other numbers that this unit will correctly replace: 1L54-7H417-AB, 1L54-7H417-AC, 1L54-7H417-AD, 1L54-7H417-AE, 1L5Z-7E453-AC, TM101. I hope this helps someone else. Did a lot of comparing prices, was cheapest here on Amazon, especially with Prime free shipping.EDIT: Almost a year later, product still functions great. It also appears they are now showing correct picture for item.
