After some cursory use, it works as advertised. By no means a device I would depend on as an EDC (to be fair, nothing in this price range would be) but for occasional use to back-up or transfer files between computers, mobile devices, or downloading your photos and videos from your camera's memory card. Sure! This will do it.Is it capable of maximum USB 3.0 speeds? I can't answer that exactly because I don't have a sophisticated way to test. What I can offer is a rudimentary experiment I conducted with it where I saw speeds exceeding what USB 2.0 is theoretically capable of, let alone what real-world capability is.During that unsophisticated test, I uploaded and downloaded a single 2.03GB video file from my computer's USB 3.0 port (through this card reader) to a brand name MicroSDXC card that is capable of 90mbps write and 160mbps read. It took approximately 33 seconds to upload the video to the card and 25 seconds to download from it. Average speeds were 62mbps and 83mbps, respectively. Given that the max theoretical speed of USB 2.0 is 60mbps (and a practical speed more like 53mbps) I can say that it is AT LEAST capable of speeds BEYOND that of USB 2.0The card reader being capable of anything greater, I can not attest. My equipment/computer, although it's no slouch, may be the limiting factor to higher speeds and not the card reader itself. I suspect this would also be the case for many users.It's most unique feature (from most others like it) is the hinged door on the end that covers the MicroSD port. At first I couldn't quite guess what the point of that was but I think it's twofold:1) Those cards are so small and thin that if you got any sort of dust or debris in that empty slot you'd probably never get it out, rendering it useless. If nothing more than a dust and debris cover, it's still an advantage.2) The cover will close with a MicroSD card in there. If you were to keep a spare MicroSD in the device all the time it basically turns it into a memory stick with card reading capabilities. No worries that the card will get bumped/broken due to the protective cover.Other non big-brand 3rd party manufacturers offer card readers that essentially have the same capabilities for $2-3 less but this one is still 50% less than big-name 3rd party.It doesn't seem to be the most rugged of construction. I expected a hair more for that extra couple dollars but it's in-line with others at this price range. I don't expect it will ever leave my home office so being rugged isn't a big concern for me.It'll likely be used 1-2 times a week and still be perfectly functional 4-5 years from now. Even these inexpensive ones last for years and years if you don't abuse them.Bottom line = It's OK to buy this one. I couldn't give it 5 stars, but I wish I could give it 4.5 as a balance between function and quality, at its price.
