It is a good, not great, compass. It will be fine for using line of sight transiting but leaves much to be desired for getting bearings. The lettering is small and difficult to discern. Not super easy to use for that reason and is limited in functionality. Neutral recommendation due to the value and stunted features available at the price point.

The pointer points to all directions and occasionally accidentally to north. It's junk, useless. Or at least this one is.

This is an excellent compass, basic but works great! I got this compass because we are always on back roads and sometimes they are not marked. It's easy to get lost, especially on a cloudy day. I can't count the times that I pull out this compass and check the direction of which I'm headed and voila we're out of the woods. This compass, as with any compass, is affected by other magnetic fields such as your cell phone, tablet, and even a radio. You should make sure that it is clear of those things before taking a reading. It also has a site hole that you line up with to go the direction that you want to go, take a reading, and then head to that spot. I love that the needle is floating in liquid, it lasts longer and is more accurate. I also love the way it folds up on itself to protect it from damage. This is a good sturdy everyday compass that you won't mind if it gets damaged or lost because of the price point. Excellent value, great compass!

This compass is a little slow to find North. It takes about 5 full seconds for it to realign each time it's moved. That isn't really an issue for me personally, but it's something to be aware of. The compass feels durable, and I like that it's protected when folded in half. I like that it has different measurement guides as well as marking stencils. I also really like that I can wear it while I'm using it. Overall it's a handy compact compass even if it's a little slow to align.

This isn't going to be the item you buy if your life will truly depend on it, but for a simple compass to keep in an emergency bag for general direction and map reading, this is a fantastic purchase. Compared to my high dollar compass and my phone app it isn't spot on accurate, but it's close enough to help guide me in the direction I need to go. This product arrived remarkably well packaged and protected, orients itself quickly and the compass stays mobile even in -20F temps. It's an absolute steal at 5 bucks and so much better than similar pocket compasses that cost 4x's as much.

I have been a land navigation enthusiast for many years. I own more than ten compasses that range in price from $15 to over $100. I also have a GPS land navigator. I like a magnetic compass for hiking because there are no batteries to fail like you have on a GPS navigator. There are basically three types of hiking compasses:o Baseplateo Mirroro LensaticThis compass is a Lensatic compass and is a similar design that the US military uses. Keep in mind the US military compass is much more expensive and rugged but it sights and operates the same way -- with a flip-up lens. What I Likeo Thick acrylic base. Not brittle cheap plastic.o Brass hinge pin. Robust.o Lanyard is included.o Adjustable bezel.o Liquid filled capsule for needle dampening.o Easy to read degree markings.o Declination adjustment markings.o Commonly used distance scales that can be used on topographical maps.o Accurate needle points magnetic NorthWhat I Don't Likeo Magnifier lens is not well made and hard to see through. Difficult to sight an azimuth.o Mine arrived with a bubble in the capsule liquid. Affects needle movement.o Compass capsule is loose and sloppy.o No travel case is included. (Minor point.)o No instruction sheet.Summary CommentsThis is a budget oriented Lensatic compass that has several good features mentioned above. However, it is marred with some flaws that make operation difficult. It looks better than it operates. This compass is obviously designed for beginners. My suggestion is: avoid frustration and spend a little more and get a better quality compass that is easier to sight and operate.

The compass shipped in its flat, unfolded state. When I first removed it from the packaging and folded it, I was impressed at how protected and durable it seems in this compact state. Once unfolded, I could see that it has an impressive amount of features as well. The title of the listing touts this as a “military compass”. Even though I think that this is largely for marketing, I found that it does have at least some things in common with its military counterpart. The hinged magnifying eyepiece has an integrated slot, which can be used in conjunction with the corresponding aiming line/sight slot on the cover when folded up perpendicular to the baseplate for shooting a bearing to a landmark This function is very similar to that of an Army issued lensatic compass. For the most part, however, this compass is more similarly designed to a very popular model of Silva baseplate compass. The rotating bezel is not only useful for setting the magnetic offset, but is also excellent for certain map orientation techniques. When the compass is open all the way, with both halves lying flat, they turn the compass into an excellent map protractor. Measurements are clearly marked in separate sections for inches, millimeters, map distance in meters (1:25000 scale), and miles (1:2400 scale). The various circular and one triangle hole(s) cut into the cover/base plate are perfect for marking points of interest on the map. Each of these holes are cut with a bevel around the edge to accommodate the writing utensil of choice. Finally, the compass includes a bright yellow nylon cord that feeds through a raised section on the base plate for around-the-neck carrying as a lanyard. All things considered, this is a well designed and useful piece of land navigation equipment.
