Measuring a Masonry Fireplace Opening for a Fireplace Screen Curtain

Midwest Hearth Measure Fireplace Screen with Existing Rod

Existing Rod in Fireplace

  • MEASURE from the top of your existing rod to the bottom of the fireplace directly below.
  • SUBTRACT 1-INCH from your measurement (1/2" for ring height + 1/2" for bottom clearance). This is the height of the screen you need to order.

Masonry Opening Height

Adding Rod and Valance Kit

  • MEASURE from the top of the fireplace opening where the valance will mount to the bottom directly below.
  • SUBTRACT 2-INCHES from your measurement if you are using our Adjustable Rod & Valance Kit. This is the height of the screen you need to order.

Masonry Opening Width

Measure Opening Width

  • MEASURE the width of your fireplace opening.
  • 40-INCHES OR LESS - our screen kit will easily fit and look great!
  • EACH PANEL is 24-inches wide; however, to get the best drape, we recommend not exceeding a 40-inch opening width.
Replacing and Existing Fireplace Screen Curtain

Replacing an Existing Fireplace Screen Curtain

  • To replace an EXISTING screen.
  • MEASURE the height of your original screen.
  • DO NOT include the rings in your measurement.
  • ONLY measure the mesh.
  • ORDER the exact same height as this measurement.

Easy to install (10 min, max) and much better quality than the screen I replaced (heavier gauge metal). Looks good too. Time will tell on how well it withstands the heat (wood burning fireplace).

My old fireplace curtain was falling apart so finally decided to replace it. Really happy with this product. Got the Brass color and initially it seemed a bit dark but hanging it looks really nice. The wiring is way thicker than the old screen and the fit was perfect. Really easy to install just remove a screw on each arm and thread in the rings. Don’t forget to add the opening arm.I should have done this a long time ago.

I ordered these based on the reviews and description. They fit perfectly, are good quality, and look way better than the 40-year-old screens that were there. Installation took ten minutes, and they operate smoothly.

The screen is exactly as advertised and customer service excellent. But us 2 guys found installation more challenging than expected. Also the rods that the 2 screens slide on were quite difficult to reinstall. Could our ages, 82 & 86, have been a factor? Yes, still not pop-out & pop-in.

Weight and gauge is the right size and dimensions were spot on. No kinks and hangs beautifully straight. Tassles are a bit smaller (about 80%) of older ones I have but they work fine and pull well.Stopped a large pop (about a 3-inch piece) from a log without any issues.Tassles also do not get hot to the touch at all. If they are, the fire being built is likely too large for the fireplace - same goes for warping/unravelling screens. As a buying tip, these screens need (and should!) overlap in the middle when closed. This means for a 48 inch opening a 54 inch screen coverage is needed minimum. Personally, my 38 inch opening fireplace required a 48 inch screen. Make sure to consider the allowances! Also consider if a fireplace does not have rods already to hang a screen it's likely meant to have a floor screen. I would recommend getting the type of screen the fireplace was built to have.
