This sponge is a special high temperature resistant sponge. It swells after absorbing water, and its surface is rough and porous, but it is as soft as cotton cloth. It is specially used to remove the oxide layer on the head of electric soldering iron.
It rubs off the oxide layer and dirt on the soldering head by rough but soft surface. It is not polished like sandpaper, so there is no need to worry about any wear and damage to the soldering head.
When the electric soldering iron is used for a long time, there will be a layer of oxide layer on the iron head, which makes it impossible to melt the solder, or the solder will not adhere to the head of the electric iron, so welding is very difficult. It is often that the tip of the soldering iron head is not stained with tin and cannot be welded. I think all the friends who have used electric iron have such experience. At this time, you can rub the electric soldering iron on the high-temperature sponge for several times, and the oxide layer of the iron head will be rubbed off, and the fresh soldering iron head inside will be exposed, which can be well welded.
Usage:
Soak the high-temperature sponge in water and squeeze out the excess water after expansion. Rub the hot electric soldering iron head on it for several times, then the oxide layer and welding slag on the iron head can be completely removed.
It will become dry after volatilization without water for a long time. It can be reused by soaking again.

The picture is of the sponge fully expanded the ones I used to work with or four times this height. This doesn’t even clear the edge of the tray on my soldering iron.

Make sure to check the thickness. This sponge is very similar to the original one that case with my soldering iron except that it only expanded to about 1/3 the thickness. This makes it a little harder to clean off the tip. It is still usable but beware and check your thickness.

Too thin for my liking. Not obvious hole in the middle.

Sponge was way too thin to be usable. Not sure what the hole in the middle is for either.

I bought these for my soldering stations. They work as good as any other sponges and were very inexpensive. They were almost the perfect fit as well so a no brainer.
