I love to draw little geometric shapes with parallel lines. This little tool is well made, is not wobbly, and enables me to draw parallel lines with ease. I love it and highly recommend it.

I ordered these to replace an older set of parallel rulers I’d been using but wasn’t happy with. These, on the other hand, have been outstanding to use. The hinges move very smoothly, and they don’t require much pressure to ensure one ruler remains anchored while moving the other ruler. The brass hinges have cork feet, keeping one ruler flat and secure while allowing the other ruler to slide smoothly across a chart. The acrylic is crystal clear, and the degrees are easily visible. The knurling on the knobs is also a nice added attention to detail. While many of us have become accustomed to navigation with our MFDs, being competent at basic chart navigation is an invaluable skill to develop and maintain, and parallel rulers are an essential tool, in my opinion. This set doesn’t disappoint and should last for many years.

I've been using this quite a bit lately studying for my captain's license and it's an excellent tool to learn with.

These parallel rules are generally well made but upon close inspection I discovered there is a one millimeter gap between the closed rules on one end. I checked the edges of each rule with a metal ruler and they are straight. I then measured the width of each parallel rule at both ends and they are all equal so apparently they were slightly out of parallel when assembled. The pivot points have no play so as long as the same rule is used to determine the course after walking to the compass rose they will be accurate. Even if I forget and use the wrong rule the error shouldn't be material over anything other than a very long course. And the truth is back in the day when I routinely employed dead reckoning on the water most of the parallel rulers I used had obvious play in the pivots so they likely weren't dead on accurate...yet we survived. A variety of errors are inherent when employing old school navigation techniques so keep binoculars handy when dead reckoning.I ordered these parallel rules for backup to the usual GPS systems so they'll likely be needed seldom if ever but if they ever are needed I am confident they will serve well despite the assembly flaw.

As an old-school Coast Guard Quartermaster (enlisted navigator), I grew accustomed to chart navigation and have never gotten away from it when planning open-water trips in the southern Caribbean. Hence, I want accurate tolls that I can depend on. Yes. I use GPS. But I first PLAN my trips using a complete chart bag and nav tools. This parallel rule is well-made. It "walks" the chart with very minimal slippgae, and easily recreates on paper a route that is confirmed by GPS. Pricing is acceptable and well worth the minor investment for the peace of mind.

These are perfectly serviceable parallel rulers. Perfect for any hand navigation. The arms are smooth and accurate. They will not hold up well though in salt air because they are not stainless.

A parallel ruler is made up of two rectangular straight edges connected by two arm joints. The arms allow the two halves of the ruler to move closer or further away while always remaining parallel to each other. To use a parallel ruler for navigation, start by identifying your current position and your intended destination on a nautical chart. Align the edge of the ruler with these two points. Keeping one arm of the ruler fixed, rotate the other arm to “walk” it across the chart. Keep moving one arm at a time until you’ve aligned the ruler with the nearest compass rose. The object is to take the ruler’s edge to the middle of the compass rose without changing the angle. This will help you determine the course to steer. Not just for sailors, parallel rulers help draftsmen, surveyors, cartographers, architects, quilt makers, and artists draw accurate parallel lines. This parallel ruler from Ironwarrior is a nice tool for anyone who collects maritime or mathematical memorabilia. The clear acrylic material gives it high transparency. The four little round cork pads on the underside of the ruler help it to glide across the chart while keeping a steady grip on the surface. The arms are shiny brass. There are two brass knobs on top for you to hold onto. Since the ruler is clear acrylic, I worry that it will get scratched or cracked, so I’m keeping it in the plastic sleeve it came in and storing it on a shelf. Even better would be a plastic case with a hanging hole.

My husband has a new 37' sailboat and this plotting ruler looks quite impressive sitting in the chart area. I hope to someday be able to take a navigation course so we can plan some trips.
