This is a very good planer, for log and Timber construction. It would be made better if the belt housing was build heavier and not a flimsy piece of tin = which gets bent easily and can rub the belt.

This is not a pretty tool, no pretty colors or machined castings, but is absolutely a workhorse. A little heavy but it plows through wood and gives me the impression it will last for years. Made in Japan, it is an old school Makita tool, ugly, functional, and built to last.

Great for adding a hand hewn effect to wood timber work once the blades have been custom ground.

I love this curved planer. It saves me almost 15 minutes of time if I had sanded one piece of oak stave. Is the surface ever smooth. yippee! Colin

This tool is fantastic. If you need a concave planner to sculpt wood - a lot of wood - this is a workhorse. I would highly recommend this tool.

I purchased this planer in the spring to do some log work on a short out of town job. This winter I got around to removing and resharpening the blades. When I took the blades off one of the two was completely bent up, ruined the other was fine. Under the ruined blade some wood "chunks" had lodged themselves between the cutter-head and the blades. It seemed to me to be a simple mistake of the factory having not tightening down the cap screws well enough. After sending the blade back to Makita with a letter of explanation, Makita is not covering the damage... and claims that I should have checked the cap screws before use! To me this would be like buying a new car and then taking out a torc wrench and checking that your tire lug nuts are properly tightened before you leave the dealership! Honestly who would do this and why would this be "normal" behavior. Besides this one unfortunate glitch, which has to do more with a rigid company policy than the tool itself, the tool is a lot of fun.

love this power tool - took me minutes to create the adzed look to my overhead beams - the company selling the specialty curved blades would do well to install a simple blade application direction to keep the user from serious mishaps. one star off for lack of directions, but otherwise love it.

This curved planer was perfect for the custom wood benches I was making from monkeypod logs and slabs. It made short work of normal board grain and powered through the end grain cuts time and again with steady pressure.I must have made at least 35-40+ end grain cuts on a piece 15"x15" no sap wood ! This was repeated 8 times total !! This tool saved Me enough hours to pay for it and gave me a nice graceful curve...It will take a little practice and you better be willing to turn the foot knob up and down as you cut, as THIS AFFECTS THE RADIUS OF YOUR ANGLE CUT..at smallest curve possible.. Total depth of wood cut for my project was about 21" 15" was end grain, full 21" depth/ht cut in one pass some short, others full length, as stock was needed to be removed for the shape. I'm very pleased with this tool....Do wish the carbide blades were cheaper! Aloha Craig.

First and foremost, Amazon advertises this item as an 11 amp "power house". Actually it has a 9.6 amp motor. Thats a 14.5% exaggeration. Other than that little misrepresentation, I like this tool. It has a nice solid feel to it, which also means its a little on the heavy side. The exhaust port is large enough so that it doesn't clog. Operating this planer takes a little getting used to. By that, I mean because the base is curved, the cutter head doesn't automatically come in contact with the wood. But after some practice. I got the hang of it. Since this is the only curved base planer I found out there, I'm going out on a limb and calling this the best curved base planer on the market.
