This kit will work for recessed holes on Subaru heads w/ a catch. U need a 5/8 drill bit to make room for the shoulder on the insert. You also won’t be using the install tool in kit as it’s huge. We used red lock tight and old head bolt to install the insert.

The counter sink tool OD was way too large to work correctly. Even after machining it in my end mill to work and then finding / making tooling to allow for the tools to go far enough in to work correctly it still did not result in a successful repair. We tried twice, the 2nd time instead of red Loctite we used sleeve retainer

I bought this because I couldnt get the time sert brand in time and what regrets I have. The drill bit was too large so when I went to tap the hole it barely cut any threads at all. The nut sert doesnt lock into place like the real brand that was ripped off. I torqued everything down and it held so I thought. WRONG, now my block is destroyed and I need a new $3000 block. I Have been using time serts for many many years and never once have a had a failure. This no name brand is garbage and man I paid alot to learn that.

Like I figured out from previous buyer from rewiev, I also went same way.2008 Subaru Impreza WRX. Stripped head bolt thread in block. Just bought this set.You need to drill first 1.5 inch of block with regular 19/32 drill bit, to access to your stripped thread in block, to screw insert in. This set not for deep head bolts, but there anought length of bits, to reach your thread depth, if you carefully using 3/8 wrench. After You do all machining, you need to install your insert, so make sure, that installer from kit goes through insert easy. I put some oil to installer thread, screwed in insert, and applied red loctite to outer thread of insert. Installed it, wait 5 mins, and remove installer.Holds torque of head bolts excellent. I was little nervous, but looks like it works.

I have used this kit multiple times with success on subaru motors, but it requires a bit of finesse to get them to work. First of all the provided drill size which is 12.7mm or .5 inch is too big to create strong threads with these inserts. You will want to go down closer to 15/32. If you chase the threads with progressively bigger bit sizes it will help to ensure a straight and consistent drill. Then slowly work the tap down a little bit at a time with oil, backing out when a good amount of material has been removed. If you plan on doing a bolt hole that doesnt have an alignment pin then you will need a 19/32 bit to drill to the desired depth for the insert to seat at (make sure to measure). If you are doing a repair on a hole with an alignment pin and want to maintain the integrity of the alignment pin, then you will have to modify the insert to make it work. The top of the provided tap will be sticking up from the surface of the block about a quarter inch when you reach the desired depth for the insert. You will have to grind down the seat or collar of the insert so that the threads can clear the internal threads you have just tapped. You will know if you havent taken enough material because the insert will bind up and require excessive torque to work down. But if you take enough it will go down smoothly. After cleaning the hole with solvent and airing out, apply red loctite to threads and work it down. The installation tool like to stick to the insert and pull it back out so to encourage it to release when it reaches the bottom make sure the threads on the inside of the insert are oiled and you have worked the installation tool in and out to clean the threads. When it reaches the bottom you just need to tighten it and quickly loosen to break it free from the installation tool. Hopefully this helps anyone trying to use this as a repair for a subaru motor. PS not a bad idea to get a m11x1.25 tap to chase the threads just in case there are some stubborn undrilled threads that the drill didnt get and you need to make clearance for it.

Project car where the engine had a stripped head bolt. I was not going to drop a $500 repair kit in a $200 engine.Used this kit with red threadlock and machined the first three inch of the hole with a 19/32 drill.Result. Fully repaired engine and the repair is holding the torque without any problem. This is a very well put together kit and is definitively worth buying.
