Although the plastic could be a little thicker, it's a great product overall. Anyone who has has had trouble with it just needs a bit of practice lifting it and flipping it right side up. It holds 3 gallons, so it's going to be a bit heavy; that is to be expected. If you support the bottom, and also keep a twisting motion / tension on it with one hand, while you flip it using the handle with the other hand, then you're good to go. Takes a little practice, sure, but once you get the hang of it then you're fine.

i purchased 2 units half a year ago, at first i was pretty happy with the thick robust plastic construction and large water capacity and hanging handle. but i quickly noticed it drains very fast, and there is a constant wet spot around the hung water feeders. It turned out, the Latch system is a DEEPLY FLAWED DESIGN!!!! The base plate latches each has a void exactly where it latch onto the top, and the voids are exactly the same level as the water line! it results in water constantly being siphoned up between the joint and dripping out the feeder! the rate of leak is even worse when bird try to drink from it, since they shake and move the feeder, and placing it on even an almost level flat surface will cause major leakage since one of the void will be below the water line due to sloped angle. The latch is also very short, making it easy to slip out accidentally and dump 2 3 gallons of water, i have to hold the filled water reservoir and the base plate separately and attempt to secure it together right outside the coop.after 6 months of this, i am so fed up, i now use the base as a Frisbee, and the top as a flowing pot. the design flaw is so bad it is almost criminal.Lixit 64oz feeder is a screw on design with a solid base that doesn't have this problem. only thing it doesn't have is the hanging handle

This is a great waterer. It's a little tricky to use because it's so big and heavy when full. It took a little experimenting to get the refill process down to a routine that wasn't messy and awkward. I fill it up about two inches from the top, screw the lid on, and carry it upside down until I'm nearly at the coop before swinging it right side up. Even after having filled it a bunch of times I always spill a little water when replacing it in the coop. A couple very vital things to remember that could bite a new customer are: This is a 3 GALLON waterer and therefore weighs nearly 21 pounds when full. There is a rectangular slot cut in the base portion and top portion that should mate with each other when the base gets screwed on. If the slots are not lined up, the unit will try and hydraulically lock, and won't feed water well or at all. I've seen reviews where people have said that this "won't even allow water to flow." Well, I'd bet that they didn't line the two slots up when screwing on the lid, and it would be very easy to make that mistake because the base can be screwed on in three wrong positions. Also, the base can be a little difficult to screw on when brand new, but after several on and offs it seemed to get much better. This waterer is not for the meek or mechanically challenged. However, if you understand how it's supposed to work and have the strength to horse it around then it's a great way to keep chickens watered for three times as long as a one gallon waterer would be.

Due to the severe drought in Texas, which has utterly destroyed my stock tank, I became concerned for the various birds on my property. Birds need water. This Little Giant 3 gallon poultry waterer is very good. The birds like it.It consists of two pieces: the top dome, and the red base. It is a bit awkward to fill, hence 'four stars' instead of five. You must turn the white dome upside down (it has four little plastic uprights, which help keep it upright while upside down), and fill it with water. Then, you attach the red base. You must have the slots lined up correctly, and even then it does not inspire confidence. On the first try the red base came off as I turned it upright, splashing water all over my feet. The next attempt worked, although some water came out. Again, the four slots that attach the base to the dome work, but barely, with no room for error. After all, three gallons of water weighs, I guess, around 18 pounds? However, once I had the Little Giant back upright, with the base firmly attached, I used the metal handle to move the waterer to my location. I set it on a small metal base I picked up at the Dollar Store, so it would not sit directly on the ground. I would not hang it up (again, due to the weight of the water).Anyway, after the birdbath has dried up, and my smaller waterer's have dried up, this Little Giant keeps water available while I am away from our weekend house for five days. Water does not seem to evaporate as quickly as it does in other bird-water devices. If the based attached a bit better to the dome, I would give it five stars.Note: I do not have 'poultry' so I have no opinion about its usefulness for chickens, ducks, etc. The space, where the water is available, does seem, to my inexperienced eyes, to be big enough for chickens to drink.
