Method for Troubleshooting the P0420 Indicator Light Fault

Oxygen Sensor

Check the voltage of sensors and whether the oxygen sensor is damaged, and inspect for any faults in the wiring.

Appearance and Sound

When abnormal noise is heard, please check whether the appearance and carrier of the catalytic converter are damaged, blocked, burned, etc.

Exhaust System

Check if there are any faults in the exhaust system, such as exhaust leaks or blockages in the exhaust pipe.

Fault Code

You can use a diagnostic tool to clear the fault codes. After clearing them, restart the vehicle and check the malfunction indicator light.

The Reasons for Initial Failure

Excessive Temperature

If excessive exhaust emissions occur, the HC and CO entering the catalytic converter will undergo transitional oxidation reactions, leading to an excessively high temperature within the catalyst; When a gasoline engine is operating normally, the temperature at the exhaust outlet can reach 1292°F, which may exceed the optimal operating temperature and reduce its lifespan.

Chronic Poisoning

Sulfur(S) and Plumbum (Pb) in gasoline, as well as Phosphorus(P) and Zinc(Zn) in lubricating oil, form oxide particles after combustion in the engine, which adsorb onto the surface of the catalyst. This prevents the catalyst from contacting the exhaust gas, thus losing its catalytic activity.

Surface Carbon

When a car operates at low temperatures for an extended period, the catalytic converter fails to activate. Smoke emitted from the engine will adhere to the surface of the catalyst, preventing it from coming into contact with CO and HC. Over time, this causes the pores of the substrate to become clogged, affecting its conversion efficiency.

Oxygen Sensor Circuit Malfunction

If the fuel contains lead or silicon, it can lead to oxygen sensor poisoning. Additionally, improper usage can cause oxygen sensor carbon buildup, ceramic fracturing, heater resistor wire burnout, internal wiring detachment, and other malfunctions. Oxygen sensor failure can result in improper air-fuel ratio and reduced catalytic converter efficiency.

The most horrible fitment. None of the guards will fit. You WILL have to drill and dremel the holes on the guards to make them fit. The base where the 2 chassis mounts are, was welded on backwards on mine. I measured it and it could have worked if they hadn't welded the flange on backwards. They must have a messed up jig that they are using for alignment positions. I was able to fit the rear and lower front covers on by modifying the holes. The Upper heat shroud however was VERY far off. One of the holes, over an inch. I was able to get 2 of the 4 to fit, and then redrilled 2 new holes, welded fender washers to the misaligned mounts and installed a couple of steel crush nuts to fix the malfunction. I was forced to build 3 completely new mounts for the lower chassis supports which bolt to the block. Again, the flange was welded on backwards. The exhaust gasket sealed nicely, however it was too oversized on the lower left bolt near the alternator. You will need to trim the gasket around the bolt hole because it hits the head and will throw the gasket out of whack. They sent 2 gaskets and 2 new doughnuts. All and all, it wasn't worth the money I "saved" The extra work cost me 3 hours total of labor. I should have sent it back, but I needed to get this job finished ASAP.

Overall performance after installation, 1 week plus, is amazing. Night and day difference. However, there are a few issues... there is not a bolt bracket/hole for the front, lower heat shield and couldn't install. No way to install OEM heat shield over bank 1 cat. Bracket that connects to bank 1 exhaust, pre cat, to transmission does not line up. You will be able to install front, top heat shield over the exhaust manifold and rear shield over manifold with a mod (create another hole in the shield for bolt to line up). 1st gen Highlander

Can’t speak to longevity yet but fit was perfect and love that it came with the flange gaskets and hardware. Some other pieces I ordered from other places did not come with any hardware.
