The lights in the top are turned on and off by a switch on the side of the handle. It has three lighting modes: constantly on, fast flashing, and slower flashing. The lights are pretty bright though, so I don't really see much use for any of the flashing modes. But that's just me.Then there's the flashlight that faces down. It is turned on and off by pushing the bottom of the handle. And I really like this feature. It is great to have when walking at night in areas where you might not be used to walking. Especially when going to parades during Mardi Gras! And all of the lights are powered by 3 AAA batteries (NOT included). To get to them, you just unscrew the bottom of the handle. And it's also worth noting that the lights in the top of the umbrella and the light that faces down, both function independently. Meaning that, you can just have either one of them on, or both of them on.The umbrella also comes with a slip over case that has a shoulder strap on it. Which brings me to, the only thing that I would have a complaint about. That the shoulder strap doesn't have any way to adjust it.

This is well constructed and easy to use. The umbrella opens automatically, via spring release. The lights give a pretty glow, without being so bright that they make it hard to see my surroundings. The flashlight in the handle will be useful for watching the ground. The umbrella comes with a sleeve, with a shoulder strap. The weight of the handle pulls that end of the sleeve down, putting the umbrella at risk of sliding out -- I may improvise a closure of some kind there.
