Udu arrived well packed and ahead of schedule. Very pleased with this drum and highly recommend it to anybody thinking about trying the udu. Very fun to play!

The LP Percussion Udu Hand Drum Clatone #4 is a very good sounding drum as well as a beautiful sculptural object and comes with a woven ring for display - it is best played while sitting on the floor crosslegged in the tradititional manner. The sound produced with the palms of the hand is very deep and warm- it reminds me of a "heartbeat". Variations in sound can be produced by tapping with the finger tips as well. For recording purposses the instrument would be best by using the small sound hole on the neck for a mic . However for live intimate performance with a small group it does produce enough volume. The Musem Quality clay is beautifully sculpted into the authentic primal shape and can also qualify to me as an art object-but, must be played for full enjoyment. I was surprised however in the color of the instrument-it did not resemble the dark smokey black brown clay as pictured in the dramatic photograph pictured but was rather a much lighter shade of khacky tan with bright orange accents. This may not be a problem for some but part of the appeal of the drum is the aesthetic value for me. I am very familiar with smoked black pottery shadings created in the firing process for this type of pot indigenously used in creating the vessel - so I rubbed into the surface a combination of black and brown enamel paint with my hands on the surface creating a better look that pleased me and did not alter the sound of the drum in any way. I recommend getting the #4 as it it is the largest producing the deepest tone. The price was very good at AMAZON and shipping time very fast-packing excellant - I am very pleased. The sound is everything with an Udu and this is 5 stars.THANK YOU AMAZON AND LP PERCUSSION.
