This is a heavy weight mortar and pestle, with two different grinding bowls that can be used by simply flipping the set over. All items provided are of good quality; the mortar and pestle themselves are made of heavy weight granite, as per description. It is also a decently large size, able to handle decent amounts of whatever you're trying to grind up. To help, a rubber no-slip mat is provided, as well as a small wooden spoon.

I have not used this other than the instructions to crush some rice to clear any granite dust. This is very heavy and well made and I am excited to use it on a variety of uses I have planned for it. Definitely better than the last one I ordered. Love the fact that it has 2 sides, a large and a small side for different uses.

Arrived in perfect condition, in 3 days to Hawaii, so that’s great. It is smaller than expected, but it's so heavy, that’s actually a good thing...if it were any bigger, I would have a hard time handling it. At 69, my hands aren't as strong as they used too be. It's so pretty, I love it. I came with extras, a cute little wooden spoon that works surprisingly well to scoop out dried herbs and other things and a little silicone mat to keep the molcajeté from moving around or scratching your counter. However, it's very smooth so I don't believe it would scratch anything. I've only used it on dried Mexican Oregano, so far, but it works very well in helping one achieve their desired coarseness for their dish. Sometimes you need a spice or herb coarse, medium or finely ground and this will accomplish all that. It says the larger end holds 2.1 cups, but mine only held about 1.75 cups of water, to the absolute very top. I don't see that being a problem. It's well made, pretty and I am very happy with it. I highly recommend it.

I love this mortar and pestle. It was packaged well and it is impressively large and in charge. It has two mortar "zones". One is large and you simply flip it over to use the smaller bowl. The pestle is similarly two-sided and you can use whichever end suits the particular purpose at hand.It also comes with a circular rubber/silicone pad that prevents the mortar from slipping. It's made of solid granite and I'm confident it will outlast me. It also looks great sitting on the counter. It weighs 2750 grams (6 lbs, 1 oz) so it's pretty solid. The pestle weighs 625 grams (1 lb, 6 ozs) so be careful not to drop it on your toes!

The m&p is very heavy solid and delivers a good crush on seeds and herbs to release flavor.Additional use: I couldn't find my nut cracker for Christmas nuts. The m&p was perfect. The walnuts, hazelnuts and almonds were easily taken out of their shells. The slip resistant mat really stabilizes the mortar and pestle.

Products that receive a five star rating from me are rare. This is one of them. The stone is well processed so that surface is clearly defined. The smooth areas are smooth and the coarse areas are coarse. Both curvatures of the top and bottom well serve the different types of crushing and grinding. The ends of the pestle are curved to match respectively.Out of the box, there are still powdery residue left from the manufacturing process. There are instructions on the box on how to clean this up. On use, this set is very nice to work with. The mortar and pestle felt well on grind and impact. The lid serves well to cover freshly crushed herbs and spices until ready for use. The wood spoon is good for scooping up the crushed food.Cleaning takes a little effort especially after working with chili peppers. It takes a stiff nylon brush and vigorous brushing to clean the pepper residue. Since in nature, the stone is porous, a little of the peppery flavour will stay. Someone told us applying and rubbing a teaspoon of real-lemon juice will rid the pepper flavour. Then rinse the lemon juice well off afterwards. This lemon-rinse method works to a great extent.Although cleaning takes some elbow grease, it is a fine product for the purpose of crushing and grinding herbs and spice. Definitely recommend.

Wow, this is one serious piece of rock. In hindsight, I should have ordered the smaller size. I got the large (5.6'') dark marble version. It looks fantastic, and I like the modern style, so different from the typical "same as they've always been since the Bronze Age" mortar and pestle look. This thing is kind of the ultimate in mortar and pestles. I almost feel like I could grind up concrete in this thing. I like that it has a shallow side, which with the wider, flatter end of the pestle will be good for things like coriander and cumin seed and such.If your goal is more toward guacamole and masa usage instead of spice-grinder, you probably do want the large version, but in the granite, which is rougher, more toward a traditional molcajete. Though if you're all about guac and masa, you should probably just get an actual molcajete.Mine arrived without any damage. Unlike some prior reviewers, I got one that did not have any glue-patched cracks. I guess the manufacturer has stopped doing that in response to complaints, or I just got lucky. The box included a note to contact the mfr. for an immediate replacement if it arrives damaged. You just supply them a picture of the broken part. I would surmise you don't have to send it back to them. However, if you get one with a glued crack, I don't know if they'll respond the same way, and you might have to do an Amazon return if you don't trust the factory repair they did. Anyway, this IS natural stone; it will have some irregularities and imperfections. However, I find the grinding surfaces on each side of each tool to be even, effective, and exactly what I expected. This is definitely a gift-quality piece, appropriate for someone who cooks (for real, from scratch) a lot and for a family, and who is not arthritic or otherwise weakened, since this is a large, heavy piece. For a little ol' granny, or someone living alone in an apartment, a mortar and pestle half this size would be quite sufficient. If you need one for grinding medications, not for (or not just for) cooking, then get a steel one, since medicines should not get into food, but a stone m&p will retain some since it's porous at the microscopic level.

This is an expensive mortar and pestle but performance is so good you soon forget the price and enjoy the quality of a product that will last a lifetime. The mortar has two sides one shallow and the other deeper and the pestle has two ends one with a wider head, so can be used for making pastes or just grinding down spices etc. It comes with a rubber mat to protect a work surface and allows the mortar to be held confidently.
