Guitar EMI

EMI & RFI Shielding

Kraftex Copper Tape is the perfect tool for EMI Shielding.

Start by covering your pickguard with copper tape - placing it lengthways and overlapping each strip. Once the whole pickguard is covered, follow the same process for the inside of the body. Most importantly, make sure the strips run up the sides and on top of the body. This means the copper within the body will be in contact with the pickguard once re-assembled. Once you've covered the main cavity and jack cavity, you need to connect the two together. Take a jumper wire, bend it through the hole where the jack socket wires go, bend it round the corner and solder each end. Once cool, cover the solder joints with copper tape. Next, you must ground your 'faraday cage' by connecting your main ground coming from the tremolo claw/bridge to the volume pot casing as normal. Finally, connect the cavity shielding to the main circuit by soldering a ground wire to the copper tape inside the cavity and then to the volume pot. That's it!

Craft Projects

Our copper tape is flexible and easy to cut which makes it ideal for bringing craft projects to life.

Why not make a gift for a friend like this beautiful candle we decorated? Simply, grab a plain candle, cut the foil into triangles - the smaller the tape, the easier it is the shape - and stick along the bottom of the candle. Easily transform a boring, plain candle into a trendy gift for someone's house.

Circuits

Copper is highly conductive which is what makes our tape great for circuits! Educational and fun, it is super easy to create a paper circuit using copper tape.

Firstly, print off a template online that shows a simple paper circuit - we recommend Makerspaces. Apply the copper tape, tracing the lines and smoothing the tape down. Make sure that when you reach the corner, you either fold the tape or solder the tape so that there is a continuous line - do not cut it. Next, cut out the space for the LED and then cut the tape at the end, when it reaches the positive symbol. Fold the paper in the corner so the positive and negative symbols, at each of the tape, would touch the battery. Add the LED to the circuit, using cellotape, and making sure that the longest 'leg' is on the positive line of tape. Add your battery and you're done!

I used the 2” tape to line the cavity and back of the scratch plate on a couple of my guitars, to eliminate the buzz caused by electro magnetic interference in the environment. I chose this particular brand because the adhesive is conductive, which is necessary for the shielding to work correctly. The tape was easy to cut with scissors or a craft knife and stuck well to the guitar and I will use it again in the future.

I love the look this tape gives to my projects, making me want to use it decoratively as well. Anyways it performs as expected, conducive through the adhesive and provides a great common ground. In the case of guitars I have used this multiple times to reduce humming from electronic noise. OH and if you’re familiar with StewMac their copper shielding is the same but 3x price for a very small amount, trust me when I say you can’t do it with what comes in the kit.

Purchased this role after reading the reviews and decided I would buy this nice thick one, as I could cut the tape into strips. I use it to line the rim of my veg pots to stop the slugs.Unfortunately, it doesn’t stop snails but slugs are my main issue. It has saved quite a few of my plants especially when they are tiny seedlings. If I use a large tray, I just put it around the outside . I also used it round the legs of my shelving in my poly tunnel. It does eventually get the Verdigris layer, but that’s easily buffed off.Once I’ve run out I shall definitely be purchasing again.

Bye bye slugs! This tape has been working great on my raised flower and veggie bed. It beats having to waste beer every night in the beer traps!

La use para apantallar una guitarra la mejora fue muy buena, la cinta es ancha lo cual ayuda bastante, es lo suficientemente gruesa y es bastante facil de colocar sobro mucho por lo que debe de alcanzar para unas 4 guitarras mínimo

I used it around my rabbit's hutch, and its brilliant. Apparently slugs love rabbit food, and are willing to slime up a two tier rabbit hutch and squish through the wire to fill their foot mouths! I am used to fighting a battle with my plants, but really! I had to go out every night and hunt them, not hard as they were either climbing up, squishing through or covering the bowl and all around it. The rabbits have absolutely no table manners and dig through their food so its everywhere, they're idiots too! On one night I went out and filled a takeaway container, twice, and I mean filled. I then found out that just as in the case with dogs, slugs can cause rabbits to be extremely ill. So one night against my principles but in keeping to Supernatural (tv show) I encircled to hutch with salt, therefore making it the slugs own fault if they went over to certain death. Some of the little gastropods must have been on the underside of the hutch, little suckers, but was a lot better. Salt is fine until it rains and the salt goes plus the horrific slug death! However bought this stuff and stuck it around both layers of the hutch. Very easy to put it place with a very easy backing. No slugs, absolutely none and if one tries, it gets an electric shock, so basically tasered, I can live with that. Don't know how long the tape will last, it has started going green as copper does when outside but I can't see any difference on slug watch.

Me sirvió muy bien para una guitarra que no estaba bien blindada, las pastillas ya no hacen ruido. El pegamiento de la cinta no impide la conexión, o sea, se pueden pegar pedazos en cima de otros.

Quality tape, great price, fast shipping...but has some caveats. It's a bit thin for shielding from extensive emf, but some common sense during application (and maybe a little trial-and-error) makes it easy to double layer where needed. The adhesive is a tad thin, which is good for making it conform to tight bends, but it can leave a little to be desired when it comes to adhering to a rough surface. My advice is to go ahead and fill/ seal off any irregularities in the surface of your guitar with paint prior to using the tape. Alternatively, one can opt (as I did) to use 3M super 77 spray adhesive to affix the tape, as well as using a cheap silicone baking spatula to smooth it down. As an aside, this tape cuts well with a sharp blade, and scissors, which makes it very useful for stencils and decorative pieces. For cutting thin strips, I found it easiest to use the spray adhesive to fix the backing tape to a flat, disposable, surface (cardboard) and use a straight-edge and X-acto knife. A little patience and you can get exceptionally smooth edges, providing you use a fresh blade for each cut. Overall, its a good product; and knowing the ins and outs of it, I'll definitely be buying more again.

I used this to shield the control cavity and pickup routes of a guitar I was rewiring. I noticed it is quite a bit thinner than the stuff I'm used to getting, and initially I thought "well they did state the thickness, my bad, guess this stuff is just lightweight for drones/RC stuff" but I used it anyway, and boy am I glad I did.Due to the thinness, it was WAY easier to mold to the contours and get it to lay flat than the old stuff I had (which was quite a bit thicker.) The adhesive is very good and had no problem sticking to paint and also bare wood, and I tested for continuity across the first piece to the last, with no solder bridges, and it was a complete circuit.I had no issues with tearing or damage related to it being thinner, either. It was just easier to work with - and I suppose if you are shielding a drone or RC vehicle the light weight would be appreciated. In short, it does everything copper shielding tape should. The thickness should have no bearing on the effect of blocking noise and my results were impressive - the guitar is now super quiet, even on a high-gain setting and when not touching the strings/bridge to ground them.

Little pricey but great quality. Be aware of what you are doing while working with this tape, it is made of metal. I got complacent and cut the crap out of my finger while shielding the pick guard of a Squire Strat I’m upgrading. Adheasive works great. I can’t speak yet for the effectiveness of shielding as my guitar is still in pieces but assuming I did it right, it should work great.*update: After assembling my guitar I noticed that there is no hum or buzz whatsoever when plugged into an amp on a clean channel, even at high volume. On the dirty channel the buzz is still there when any single pickup is selected although it is quieter. When the middle and either the bridge or neck pups are selected together, the buzz goes away (which it should in theory any way but never really did fully). Not sure if that is typical or if I just didn't do that great of a job, but overall I'm happy with this product and there's plenty of tape left over to shield a couple more guitars.

This seems like a nice product, but I seem to have gotten the betamax instead of the VHS. It really gummed up my player.Seriously though, if you're looking at this product, there's a good chance you're looking to shield your guitar's cavities and pickguard. You're going to want to have a few things on hand before you get started:1. Xacto knife. This is precision work, and you need a precision cutter.2. Nitrile Gloves. This is optional, but when you're done there's going to be small sharp bits of metal everywhere. if you aren't careful you'll end up with more papercuts than you can count.3. A workbench appropriate to your work height. I used a plastic folding picnic table, covered with an inexpensive flannel sheet (to minimize the spread of metal debris, and to protect my instrument's finish). This made it easier for me, but feel free to disregard this advice. Which is what you were going to do anyway. This tape isn't exactly easy to work with, but if you have a bit of patience and think your way through some of the trickier curves, you'll get the hang of it pretty quickly.
