About this item

  • Monitors your K&N filter for air flow
  • Indicates when the filter should be cleaned
  • Easy to read, even after engine is off
  • Available with 1/8 In. thread or grommet mount

The Filter Minder is an air filter service indicator that monitors air filter restriction and indicates when the air filter should be serviced. As the air filter gets dirty, the yellow position indicator moves in the clear window of the service indicator and locks at the highest point. It can be read even after the engine is turned off. The air filter should not be cleaned until the yellow position indicator reaches the red zone.

At first I was worried because this unit is twice the zize of the original. But I actually like this one better. It has graduated markings and literally took 30 seconds to switch the two.

On my Chevy Aveo5, with a 3 year old OEM filter - this is currently reading as 75%. This reading seems about right - so I am happy that this should prevent me from replacing my air filters unnecessarily. I mounted it in the airbox easily (out of the way of the hood):* drilled a hole in the removed, plastic airbox (using the next smaller size drill than it recommended),* Used a round file and clippers to clean up the hole and to fit the included rubber grommet (using a little Rubber/plastic friendly synthetic grease - NOT SILICON GREASE - this will harm your O2 sensor)* push the filter minder through the rubber grommet, also with some synthetic greaseNote that this is basically the same part as the other Wix filter minder also on Amazon (the Wix is cheaper), BUT this one reads restrictive at 10 inches of water (the other reads 'red' at 25 inches of water). Also note these 'ratchet' as you drive - so if your system becomes restrictive momentarily (really damp), you may find it reading more restrictive than you expected (just reset it with the yellow button on the top, and all will make sense again). Finally - this actually turned me off of getting a K&N filter - If my 3 years old OEM filter and OEM airbox is still reading within the 'acceptable' restriction range compared with a performance K&N filter - I think I will stick with my cheaper OEM filters (for now - depends upon how much more I can get out of my OEM filter before it reads restrictive - I do like the idea of buying only one more air filter for the life of the car if I was to go for the K&N).

This filter minder works great. What most people don't seem to realize is that this minder goes into the red zone at 10 inches of water (H2O) instead of 25 " H2O like most commercial units do. For someone interested in monitoring their stock vehicle's intake system and air filter, this may or may not work well depending on how restrictive things are. This is designed more for higher flowing aftermarket intakes but will work fine if your OEM intake system has relatively low restriction. If you're unsure and don't want to take a chance, buy a normal unit like the 25" Wix model sold here on Amazon.

This is just the what was needed on those vehicles with air cleaners that are difficult to disassemble because of space limitations or awkward to snap together retaining clips. Now you tell at a glance if the filter is getting close to replacement time. One suggestion though, the installation instructions say to drill an 11/16" hole in the air cleaner. Who has an 11/16" drill or hole saw {doesn't exist, anyway}? Better yet, drill a 5/8" {hole saw} or even a 9/16" hole and file it out a little. I went to the trouble of putting in an 11/16" hole and found it to be too big and the grommet and the device to be loose and kind of a sloppy fit. When I bought a second one for my other car, I drilled a smaller hole and got a tighter fit.
