This is my introduction to KASE brand camera products for my Nikon DSLR (2010) and my new Z9 (2024) lenses. KASE makes great magnetic filters and lens accessories, and this lens hood is an example of their very high quality and design. Owning this piece is leading me to buy some of the super convenient magnetic filters sets and up my game out there!

Kase makes great magnetic filters and lens accessories, and this lens hood is mostly an example of their very high quality and design. I say mostly, because there are some design features I find somewhat perplexing and lead me to pass on this hood. Keep in mind that this hood is designed to fit exactly one lens, the Nikon/NIKKOR Z 14-28mm f:2.8 S, which retails for over $2000, so the evaluation criteria here are less forgiving than for any similar product on a lesser lens. The good:+ This all-metal lens hood looks and feels like a super high quality product. It absolutely reflects the fact that you are putting this on a $2000 lens.+ The built-in magnetic filter base grabs the filter firmly and keeps it far enough back to avoid vignetting at 14mm. The base also turns, allowing you to easily rotate polarizing or other special effect lenses that require a specific orientation.+ The lens cap is all metal and snugly grabs the hood, but only when you have the hood on in the inward facing orientation. There is more negative to say about this lens cap in the negatives section.+ The OEM lens cap from the Nikon HB97 hood also fits the Kase hood.+ The OEM lens cap from the 14-28 lens fits while the Kase hood is installed. The bad, which is rather disappointing for a product that goes on a $2000 lens and itself costs quite a bit:- The hood can be flipped over and fits over the lens objective, however the connection is not very positive because of the stick-on rubbery surface that keeps the hood in place with just friction (when installed with the hood facing out, it locks on like the OEM hood). This really perplexed me, because they could have easily made it so that it locks onto the lens in either orientation, just like the OEM version. The Kase hood could easily fall off if the camera is carried while the hood is facing inward, which is not the case with the OEM version.- The very nice all-metal cap only fits on the back side of the hood, and only with friction, so it only works when the hood is installed with the ears facing in. This could have been designed so that the metal cap could be installed on either side of the hood and could also have had a more positive attachment method. To protect your lens, you must remove the filters and use the OEM lens cap, be prepared to sacrifice the filters to protect the lens, or use the OEM hood cover.- The magnetic filter base does not accept threaded filters. Again, this is perplexing because the Kase 77mm magnetic filter base accepts both magnetic and threaded filters. This means that you either need to use two different 112mm hoods or buy all magnetic filters. I'm not eager to throw away my very expensive threaded 112mm filters or carry around two hoods. So, if you already have 112mm screw-on filters, then you really don't want this hood - just get more screw-on filters. This is not to say that you shouldn't get magnetic filters, because they are AWESOME. You could even buy the magnetic adapter ring to use with the OEM hood, and then you would have a hood that, although plastic, locks on in the inward-facing position.I have a hard time figuring out why I'd need or want this hood, even as a replacement for a lost OEM one. Yeah, it's a really nicely made product, but it just doesn't fill a need that isn't already covered by the OEM hood and is inferior in crucial ways. I could make the argument for a nice metal hood if it at least had all the functions that the OEM hood had, but given the fact that it doesn't take screw-on filters and can fall off when reversed, I just can't find a good reason to go with this hood. As a very nicely made product, it's a 5-star, but given the deficiencies relative to the OEM model, I have to go with a much lower score. Kase, you make great stuff, but you have some mistakes in your execution.

So, I picked this up for my Nikon 14-24 mm f/2.8 S Z lens so I can use filters with this lens. I have the F mount version of this lens and due to the bulbous front element, I use the Fotodiox Pana system so I could use a polarizer or just a UV filter to protect it. For long exposures, I use a Benro 150mm system. Both work great, though the Fotodiox is a bit more cumbersome. Enter this system for the Z version. Beautifully made, it mounts to the lens perfectly. It makes swapping out 112mm filters a breeze. Mind you, Kase filters are not required. Just use a DIY kit to convert any filter for use with it. If you do go the DIY route, just use the magnetic mount on the filter and it snaps right on to the hood. It gives me peace of mind having a filter to protect the lens. The magnet is strong and the filter doesn't pop off. Color me giddy. Now I am shopping for other filters to use with this lens. Fantastic system. I highly recommend it.
