I love it. I’m doing charcoal drawings of art. Anything from nature just to objects. They’re very nice. Is it to use and they’ll be last me a long time. Would buy again.

It's been ages, but I have worked with charcoal before and really enjoyed everything except the mess. This looked like a nice starter kit to play around with for someone like me, who is basically just scribbling for fun. A couple quality dings right off the bat: the foam insert was covered with lint and small debris, and the white pastel was broken. Given how fragile pastel and charcoal sticks are, this wasn't a complete shock, and some artists break these in half anyway. Still, I removed a star since the product didn't arrive in perfect condition.I tested them on a 75 lb sketchbook pad and they performed pretty well- the soft didn't smear out and blend quite as well as I'd hoped, but medium was exactly what I expected. The hard stick retained it's crispness surprisingly well as I layered soft charcoal and pastel on top of it. I am happy with the sizes of blending sticks that are included, especially the largest which is a size I haven't worked with before.

The large chalk sticks are the stand-outs in this charcoal set. They have a nice smooth texture that makes them easy to use on most surfaces. If you lay them on their sides and drag them you can get some pretty interesting effects. The stick charcoal feels about the same, regardless of the hard/medium/soft grade labels on the side. They all have a medium-hardness feel and are a bit difficult to smudge. The tortillions are nice, but they can't do much if your medium is a bit unresponsive.I feel like this would be an ok set to start with if you are just trying out chalk for drawing.

I am an amateur artist, and my skills with charcoal are in the trial-and-error stage (mostly error, but I digress). With that in mind, I found these Kalour charcoals and pastels very nice to work with. They felt smooth on the paper, did not generate excessive crumbs or dust, and blended well using the provided paper stumps. The examples shown in the photos are done on Strathmore drawing paper. As I tried to demonstrate in the photos, I did not see much difference - any difference, really - between the different hardness grades. Somebody with a delicate hand might notice, but I honestly couldn't tell. That's not important to me, so it didn't factor into my rating. On a side note, this set is beautifully packaged - would make a very attractive gift box for an aspiring charcoal artist.

The package was delivered over night - can’t beat that. I ordered this product because as a hobby I make miniature architectural models. I use all types of paints, pigments, powdered and stick pastels. I use it for weathering/aging not drawing pictures. I never used charcoal. The attractive, hardy black box is made of stiff cardboard that looks like it will last for a reasonable period of time. The are twelve sticks all together. Nine black are made solely of charcoal and three grey (light and dark) and white are made of pastel. The black are organized as to hard, medium, soft. Only the black sticks have degree of hardness noted on them. Included are three paper blending stumps. Rather than having paper labels and information on each stick it is printed right on them. Some would like this, others not. It’s a matter of choice. A foam layer keeps the items in place.Answer to Rufus questions:The sticks will break if you put too much weight on them especially soft sticks. You can draw and make details using corners and sharp points. The colors do blend easily. This product is nicely put together and would make a nice gift especially for beginners.Answer to Rufus questions:The sticks will break if you put too much weight on them especially soft sticks. You can draw and make details using corners and sharp points. The colors do blend easily. This product is nicely put together and would make a nice gift especially for beginners.

Anyone starting out in charcoal or pastels would do well to start with a set like this. Before you think about color, you need to understand value--degrees of light and dark--and this set has accurately gradated pieces so you can practice starting light and adding more dark intensity as your drawing develops. Often, you'll find sets that label their charcoals as soft medium hard, but don't really have much difference between them. This one does. Very nice. The grays are soft like pastels, great for layering over the black to add highlights. The white also functions this way, though it's maybe a little harder than the grays. The blending stumps are excellent, different sizes for larger or smaller areas. I am impressed with this set of simple, effective tools. Great for starters, when you really don't want to be overwhelmed with too many colors or types of implements.

This is a great charcoal starter set that was packed very well. Only one piece arrived broken and unfortunately it was the only one of its shade, but all in all a fabulous bargain for an essential art tool. The charcoal handles well and there is a discernible difference between the hard and soft tones that I appreciate. The blending sticks work as they should and having three sizes is very beneficial. Overall a great starter set at a great price.

This charcoal set is a fantastic addition to my art supplies! The variety of soft, medium, and hard charcoal sticks makes it easy to achieve different shading effects, and the white pastel adds a nice touch for highlights. The blending stumps work well for smooth transitions, and everything comes neatly packaged in a protective box.
