About this item

  • Sandsmart conveyor system continuously monitors the load on the drum motor to prevent an overload situation
  • Infinitely-variable speed (up to 10 FPM) allows the user to choose the perfect feed rate
  • Toolless abrasive take-up fasteners make changes quick and easy
  • Precision-machined and dynamically-balanced aluminum drum is designed to dissipate heat and has a 3/4" oscillating stroke
  • Conveyor bed parallelism is easily changed by turning the dial on the outside of the bed
  • Mobile cabinet features a heavy duty 45" x 24" footprint to increase stability and has a door to keep items stored securely
  • Snipe is virtually eliminated thanks to the adjustable tension rollers that apply downward pressure to the workpiece

The 2244 Oscillating Drum Sander from JET has an exclusive oscillating feature that helps create the best sanding finish with the least amount of dust. When in the oscillating mode, the sanding drum head oscillates from left to right which lowers heat build-up on the sanding belt, reducing loading and burning. The innovative tool-less parallelism system keeps adjustments simple. The worktable is easily positioned by a turn of the parallelism dial. The Sandsmart conveyer system continuously monitors the load on the drum motor to prevent an overload situation. The mirrored design of the dust hood optimizes dust collection preventing chips and dust from getting between your work-piece and the finish. The JET 2244 Oscillating Drum Sander delivers everything you need for an effortless finish.

I am extremely frustrated with JET parts and repair support and would NOT recommend buying any of their products.I have a JET 22-44 Pro. It was produced new in 2005. The feed belt roller was bent and I was looking for a replacement. To my dismay JET has changed the way the roller attaches to the motor, and has discontinued parts for older models. I worked with JET service and the response was, "that connection is obsolete and we no longer make those parts, you will need to have the piece machined or you can purchase a new tool." I asked for the specifications so I could have it machined and the response was, "sorry, that is proprietary information, we cant share that." So, its obsolete to the point that you it is not made, but not obsolete enough to release the part specifications so that others can continue to repair the tools. After several frustrating rounds of emails with service I got nowhere. I decided to look around at the history of the tool. I found that the JET 22-44 was identical to the Supermax sander by Laguna. I contacted their parts department and was delighted by the service I received. They helped me compare specifications between my part and theirs and we were able to determine it was a match. In the conversation I relayed that I had been told by JET Customer Service, "that JET doesn't make parts for older tools and it is unreasonable to expect a company to support a tool for that long." The Laguna tech was extremely surprised by this response. He indicated that Laguna will continue to produce parts for their tools as once the tooling has been made, the cost to continue production is minimal. With this experience I would highly recommend anyone interested in a drum sander look into the Laguna models. They are functionally identical and the company is dedicated to supporting the tools for the long term. I am extremely disappointed that JET has decided to pursue this strategy with part production and I will looking at other manufacturers for tools in the future.

First job with this drum sander I ran around 400 lineal feet of hard maple, and I have to say the sander performed flawlessly. I had to adjust the drive/conveyor belt once after the about 150 lineal feet, but that is expected, as a new belt will stretch with initial use. The oscillating drum head feature is a must if you are looking for a better finish. In my opinion, definitely worth the extra cost. I also like the fact that the drive for the conveyor belt is on the outfeed of the unit and not the infeed side. This results in less slippage of the conveyor belt when performing under higher loads. I'm very happy with the sander so far and at this time recommend the machine.

I wanted to write a review after finishing a project using this drum sander but I never got to it. So I finished several projects and know the likes and dislikes of the sander.First the dislikes. I wish the cord was longer on the sander. But that can be easily addressed with a decent extension cable. The second is no swivel options for wheels. The ones that come with the cabinet are set in one direction only with a built-in stop. This is great for a large shop where a machine lives once placed in a place. My place is small so I move some of the tools around to make things work. This is an issue, but a little lift and things slide left to right. The likes. It arrived very well packed. I’ve assembled the cabinet and since I was alone at that time, I had to build a pulley system to raise the head and place it on the cabinet. Then I mounted the folding tables and checked everything for alignment before tightening all the screws. After that, I’ve checked the machine for parallelism, no adjustments were needed as it came perfectly adjusted from the factory. I’ve checked it with an engineering flat bar and feeler gauges. The oscillating feature actually almost gives you another inch of sending surface, as the drum is 22 inches but the motion of ¾ inch from side to side when used on wide materials in both feed directions you get an additional 1.5 inches plus the 44 so it’s 45.5 inches in total. The other important improvement over the older model was the feeding belt is powered by the motor after the sanding drum, not in front. So it's pulling instead of pushing the wood through the machine. This helps to keep the belt running flat and prevents the item from shifting keeping the belt true and tracking. I had the older model without the oscillation and if it wasn’t tensioned pretty hard then the traction was an issue. The only way to prevent it was to tighten it hard, which wore the brass bushings leading to replacement every year or so of heavy use. Here this no longer is the case. The dust collection is fantastic. The oscillating function is an additional $500 and well worth it. Doing light passes with 180 or 220 grit eliminates any marks on the wood. Especially if you used a wood gel-like filler on porous hardwoods like oak. That’s where the oscillating function shines. You set the belt to a medium-slow speed, oscillations to medium speed, and let the wood make its way through the machine making its magic with an end result looking like it came out like it was done by a wide belt sanding machine. The only wish was that Jet made this one in the 25-50 inch size but at that width, power may be an issue so why not a 220V option. Also, it would be great if there was an option to re-wire the current machine to 220V as most of my tools are running on 220V. But it’s not needed as if you don’t go crazy aggressive the motor has plenty of power to handle anything you throw at it. For more aggressive cuts a thickness planer should be used. If you’re using a sander because of its width capacity, expect to put it through several passes as it was never designed to be a dimensioning tool but more of a finishing tool.I do love the folding tables which are sturdy and fold nicely to allow for compact storage of the machine.Would I recommend it or buy it again? Absolutely. Well made and engineered product. Much better than the previous 22-44 oscillating model and worth the upgrade. In my opinion, Jet addressed all the issues the older model had and made it better. One upgrade you may want to consider is an aftermarket digital gauge reader. Good luck with the purchase of your machine. I got mine for a price that you can’t get today due to inflation and shortages, and I’m glad I did. So you better get yours as I think the price will go up on all tools, not just this one.

The only gripe I have about this machine is that the paper doesn't last long at all if you're cutting the full 22" width. The oscillating feature is phenomenal and the dust collection on this machine is better than 99%. I have virtually nothing coming out the other end on hardwoods. I would highly recommend the DRO option. The scale on the top of the machine does not necessarily equate to the head moving with it; they sue a jack screw, not a ball screw. The DRO gives you the actual movement of the head. Dialing in the bed to the roller is a bit of pain, but once set it is very accurate. I routinely get better than 0.005" accuracy on a workpiece. 0.003" is typical with 2-3 passes.
