I generally play much higher end instruments but I picked up one of these and was shocked at what I ended up with. So much so that I ended up buying a used one in another color locally. Fender Squiers are the standard instrument at this price point and this bass is built so much better than those, which should be avoided even for a new player. In case it's not obvious to you, this is a short scale bass which is 4" shorter than a standard bass. Perfect for me as a person under 5'6" tall that usually plays guitar. You will need to make sure to buy short scale strings rather than regular bass strings when you replace them, I recommend the Ernie Ball Short Scale Slinky strings. It's easier to bend the strings than it is on a full size bass and the sound, while slightly different (better?) to a trained ear, is effectively identical to a full size Fender PJ bass so you're not sacrificing anything. Basses don't need to be huge! The stock pickups sound fantastic, in fact I prefer them to the supposedly better Yosemite pickups that came in my Fender American Performer P Bass. They're louder and a little more aggressive. In the used bass I replaced the pickups with Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound pickups which are the loudest and growliest pickups I've heard, and while the difference between that and my Fender is massive, compared to the stock pickups it's not such a huge jump. Definitely better and worth upgrading but that just says a lot about how good these Ibanez pickups are.The neck is a really nice, simple unfinished maple neck. I'm not a fan of the lighter reddish brown jatoba wood on the fretboard, just aesthetically, but it feels good and the back of the neck is nice and smooth, not sticky at all, great for moving around quickly which I do a lot. The width is 41mm at the nut which is a little wider than the 1.5" Jazz neck I prefer, but still feels plenty good to play. As long as this isn't for a really small child the size is fine. If you're buying for a little kid, try the Ibanez Mikro bass which is slightly cheaper and even shorter and lighter than this one, and comes in more colors. The weight is good, I don't remember off hand but I want to say we're in the 7-8 lb. range, though the older used one is lighter than the newer one. It is a little unbalanced toward the neck so you do get a bit of neck dive but I also have a very soft and smooth strap, so I think if you have a strap with a little more friction it's fine. Nothing like the neck dive on an SG or anything. I will say that even this bass is too heavy for my wife to wear comfortably for an hour standing up, but it's tough to find something lighter. Again, maybe the Mikro is a good option if you really want light as air.It sits really comfortably on the body. Some short scales with different body styles like the Gibson basses have the neck further out to the left because of the way the body is shaped, but no problem like that here. I also like that it's a bigger body. A lot of short scales cut the body size down when they scale the instrument down and sometimes it makes them look like toys. This bass is nice and wide and chunky at the body while using a relatively unique body style that isn't trying too hard to copy Fender's styles. It looks WAY cooler than a Mustang (Fender's short scale bass) in my opinion. And because it's not trying to be an exact copy of a popular shape it doesn't look strange with the shorter neck on a full size body. The newer models of these also have a much nicer bridge than the older model I bought. I had to upgrade the bridge on the used one but the newer one I left alone because it's great. My primary bass cost over 10x what this does and is a beautiful instrument, but I still play this one all the time because of how good it sounds. Obviously the craftsmanship on a high end instrument completely blows away something at this price point, butThis is my #1 recommendation to anyone looking for a short scale bass. Close second is the Sterling Short Scale StingRay which is $599 new, a little lighter and smaller and has a different sound that some people prefer due to the different type of pickup.

I was looking for a short scale, lightweight bass since I'm a smaller person, and my ol reliable Yamaha is very heavy with an XL scale. For the price, this bass is incredible. It' lighter than my Stratocaster, but a bit heavier than it's competitor, the Squire Bronco, by about a pound. The sound quality is incredible, SOOO much better than my Yamaha. I absolutely love the gorgeous glossy finish too. All around, it's a wonderful bass and I'm so excited to bring it onstage.

I bought this bass, not expecting much. I wanted a short-scale that was inexpensive to carry around and "beat" on when I don't want to pull the Fender out of the closet. I, of course, did have to do some setup; adjust the bridge and string height. The neck is flat, and very heavy, so it feel sturdy, which is a good thing to me. It does make the neck dip when played on your knee, or even with a strap. Not a big deal, but worth mentioning. The G string was way off intonation. I literally had to bring the independent bridge for the G string all the way back; it can't go any further. And at that position it is just barely intoned. Adequate for me.The strings and pickups are very cheap, so don't expect much from those. I put some E=100 Flatwounds on for my own comfort. I did have to set the intonation for the E string again when I did this. This is not a bad bass for beginners, and at 30" scale for anyone wanting a shorter scale bass, just know that you will have to do some adjustment, which is normal for this price range.Oh, and the pickguard is kind of cheap. Was showing scratches from my finger after one use. Went looking for a better replacement online, and only found replacements for the TMB100 NOT the TMB30... so make sure to pay close attention if you plan on doing that.Part of me wishes I went with the short scale Ibanez around this same price range, but I was really drawn to the look of the body on this one.

For the money it's a very good deal. The strings could be better and the head stock looks kinda cheap. But it does the job.

This is an amazing value. I an Ibanez SR5000 and a Fender American 60s P Bass. Both are very expensive. I bought the TMB30 since it is a short scale and is $179. I just wanted this mainly to beat the hell out of it and not worry about dings, dents or damage if something happens to it. Plus its a short scale and i dont have one of those.Ibanez is known for there top notch quality and for $179 this bass is built with the quality of their high end basses. The fret ends are perfect, the setup was spot on, which for beginners is great cause you wont have to worry about a setup. You can just play it. The neck profile is a thicker C kind of like an older P bass C shape. Its very smooth and comfortable in your hands. Action was set just right. The neck was straight so no truss rod adjustment needed either. The sound is great too. The pickups are a little higher than i like so it plays hot right now. But the PJ pickups sound really great. The single coil J Bass pickup will have a little hum when you only use the J pickup, which is normal for a single coil. This is a short scale, but dont think of that as for beginners. Tyler Joseph plays a short scale bass on alot of songs. If you want a great playing bass for a low price this is for you. You can also get the long scale bass Ibanez makes - the TMB100 for i think $200. The TMB30 is outstanding and you will be glad you bought it when you are slapping the bass. So DO IT NOW...SLAP BUY NOW
