I don't know why this review's "rating features" offered me the option to give my opinion on the flavor. It's a stick. So i didn't lick it. Got it to mash my crout - it's perfect. It is huge and a bit weighted. This company isn't messing around, You could use this as a weapon. Makes mashing a breeze - I would buy this again or as a gift to a fellow crouter !

I received this SauerStomper in a timely manner. It IS smooth, sturdy, and well made. No cracks or blemishes. The first thing I did was wash it off (without soaking) and air dry thoroughly. Then I treated it as I do any of my fine wood equipment, like my cutting boards: I lightly oiled it with MCO. Since I have only had it a few weeks; I have only used it a few times but I have found it to be comfortable in my old hands and just the right length for my canning jars that I use for fermentation. I do recommend this product. Just so you know, I am NOT a paid reviewer and I do NOT receive Any free items for reviewing. If I like something, I say so. At 77, I am too old for shenanigans.

We bought large and small And will buy a crock next, currently using jars and 5 gal food grade tubs. These are very nice, smoothly finished and effective. The first time we wet it, the birch developed a 2 inch split near the larger end. I hesitate to use it split because you can't clean inside that and it will harbor contaminants. Can't fault the company, it's good tight-grained wood, but wood is a natural product that will swell and shrink on wetting and drying. I just didn't expect it to happen on the first use. We will have to replace it. Maintenence is with food grade mineral oil, I assume, since that's what it's finished with? Perhaps that will help to close the narrow gap.

Just love this pounder. It is long enough to tamper down sauerkraut in large jars. Very sturdy. It will last a lifetime and you can pass it on in the family.

I discovered this great tool when I was looking all over Amazon and elsewhere for a solid wood, large heavy Sauerkraut tamper-pounder. Something that would fit my large 1/2 gallon Ball jars and also my large crocks but would still fit inside of my smaller Ball Jars and this thing does! 'Sauerstomper' exactly what I was looking for! It's tall & heavy but not too heavy to use comfortably. At first I had considered buying a different brand of pounder-tamper on Amazon 'Mason Tops' which seems to be popular with fermenters but I decided not to buy that one after I read reviews and found out that the Masontops brand tamper-pounder is made of a couple of pieces of wood glued together which I DID NOT like the idea of AT ALL. So I bought this 'Sauerstomper' instead and I'm so glad I did! I use it to 'stomp' the cabbage in the bowl as you can see from my photo that I posted with this review, and I also use it to tamp down my cabbage into the jar etc. I maintain my Saurstomper the same way I do for my other unfinished solid wood kitchen items such as my Boos butcher block cutting boards and Boos block table by oiling my Sauerstomper and other wood with mineral oil on a regular basis which keeps the wood from drying out and degrading. I absolutely LOVE this thing, the name 100% fits it, it's also a cute name but it is a real badass of a kitchen tool. I plan to buy an additional stomper to give as a gift to my sister who wants to begin fermenting.
