The look of the clock is very nice. It presents itself well and looks good wherever it is placed. The face and bezel is a classic design that is easy to read, although the face is slightly canted to the left on the one I received (It is not that noticeable unless you really scrutinize it). The hourly chime is nice however, it is a very low quality sound that will remind you of 1980s video game audio. The volume is adjustable enough that it can be heard well throughout most of the first first floor the home (1,200 sq ft) without it being obnoxious. Once you pick up the clock and examine it closely you will realize this is a cheaply made overseas product. The only country of origin I can find on it is on the electronics which show that they were made in Taiwan. The quality controls seem okay as it does "present" well, but when you pick it up and scrutinize it, you will see that it feels very light and artificial, almost like plastic. The "wood" appears to be fiberboard with a veneer coating. As someone who has lived and purchased furniture abroad, I can tell you for sure the markup on this is quite high as you could by this abroad for significantly less. I nearly returned this as I felt the price is much too high for the quality of the product. However, it was a gift and I knew the receiver would enjoy it. If I purchased this for myself, I would have returned it base on the quality for the price... No where near worth the $169 I paid for it.

we needed a mantel clock big enough to see across the room but small enough to not upstage the picture hanging over the mantel. this clock has fit that bill which was why it was purchased (there were other mantel clocks that would have looked better but would not have been large enough to see 'from afar'). we chose the cherry finish and it is a beautiful and accurate timepiece. the chime worked on first setting, but then began to deteriorate in sound until it was chiming all the time. changing batteries didn't fix this, so we have turned that feature off for now. yes, we could have sent it back but we would like to have it looked at first - maybe it'll be just need a little adjustment!

Based on another review I read, I was nervous buying the clock but for this low price on a Howard Miller, I thought I would take the chance. I've had the clock almost 2 weeks now. First, I'll say it is made or assembled in China so if that bothers anyone, no need to purchase (I say that because I read that some people were surprised about this on reviews for other clocks). The rosettes feel plastic-y to me, not sure if plastic or wood, but the whole clock has a nice weight to it. The brass on the bezel and feet are a darker brass in person (in the pic looks a little lighter) and the numbers on the face actually look a little better/clearer in person (in pic on my computer, number edges don't look clean, especially on the IIII). I didn't notice from the picture that there was no second hand, which I would have liked, and it only chimes on the hour (not every 15 mins), which I do like. After putting the batteries in, I had to set the chimes, which was fairly easy.I've never had a chiming clock so I wasn't sure if I would like it. Also, some reviews for other clocks that said the chimes were too loud not adjustable so I was relieved that the sound volume on this clock is adjustable. I have it set at the low end but not the absolute lowest and it's perfect. Although near the TV, I don't notice it when we're watching TV. The chime is lower than the volume at which we watch TV, yet I can hear it from a couple rooms over in my master bedroom when quiet. I really love the ambiance it adds to our home!

I ordered this thinking at $[...], it must be fairly good quality. When it arrived, the "wood" veneer was wrinkled. Not broken or warped during shipping, but wrinkled. Hard to believe that is a wood veneer. Also, the glass front seemed to be plastic to me. I can't prove that, but I'm pretty sure it was. Finally, the hinged back (to get to the clock and battery controls) was stuck. Seemed to be glued shut.I've already printed out the return slip. I would never consider a howard miller clock through amazon again and I'm hesitant about any clock through the web now.Horrible Horrible product. I would have guessed it's value at about $20 (if it had actually worked).
