because I still have my mother's all metal cookie press gun that is indeed much larger.I ordered this cookie press gun as a gift so the recipient will never know what I do. That being most things nowadays are made as cost effective as possible. So instead of all the parts being made of metal on a cookie press gun, many are made of plastic and metal, this one included. Only the barrel and mechanism of the gun are made of metal, the rest of the gun is plastic. And though the discs are metal the all important ring that holds them on, as well as the handle, are made of plastic.Though this gun works the same way as my old metal one, there is no comparison to the quality. So this was a hard product to rate since I am indeed a bit biased. As far as does it work the same way as my old press and get the same result? Yes, with practice and the correct consistency of the cookie dough, it does. With any cookie press the trickiest part of using one is to get the correct moisture content in the cookie dough. Too moist or too dry will cause any number of problems. And some dough recipes are a bit too moist so they must be chilled first before using in the press to make the dough firmer so the gun works properly. Using any cookie press gun with any recipe the first time you try it takes a little work and some trial and error, but once you get the moisture and consistency content correct things will go well. The only reason I took off a star was because of the fact plastic was used and the price did not reflect that fact. There is no fair way besides pricing that a metal cookie press gun can be compared to one with plastic parts, even if you get the same results. I would expect to pay $35 to $40 for a solid metal cookie press gun, but not this one. This one should sell for no more than $25.00.

I needed to replace my old Pampered chef version of this. I've looked at several and decided on this one because of the stainless steel....the less plastic the better! This set has plenty of your basic options for both the piping tips and cookie disks to get started decorating. The cookie disk includes two holiday disks, a christmas tree and a heart. The cookie gun is easy to take apart and put back together.... "Just remember to tip/slant the pluner when reinstalling it back in the barrel or it won't fit." It definitely feels more solid than the plastic ones and, there's no worries of the end busting off with a thicker dough as with my old Pampered Chef one. Both ends are good and secure and just twist and lock into place. It does come with instructions and a cookie press recipe to get you started although, you might find it a little hard to understand in places due to the language barrier. I do like that you can look on either side of the box to get a colored picture of what the tip/disk will look like as a finished cookie, I find it very helpful. There is definitely a learning curve to the cookie press "this was my first time using that option." I decided it was easiest to fill with dough from both ends, than trying to fill it from one long end because you definitely don't want air pockets in the dough. It will cause uneven cookie patterns as you will see in my pictures. You also want a dough that's not overly sticky or too stiff as this will cause you problems as well. The dough you pick will also determine how well it holds its shape/detail when baked. I tried a couple of different shapes and they all turned out pretty good. I will also be using the tips for my deviled eggs, makes a nicer presentation at family gatherings. Most importantly, I had a lot of fun learning to use it. I'm very happy with the quality, ease of use and the selection of disks and tips. Great for beginners or just those of us who love to bake.
