I thought that this was a lesser version of the many Geiger counters they produce however upon looking at their site and finally finding a comparison chart (their site/support/GMC_Selection_Guide.htm), This GQ GMC-SE is a good bit better than any of their 3XX series meters, many of which cost even more. It has double the memory of the next best and several other things. The only fault of it, compared to a couple of the lesser ones, is that it does not have the ability to view the logged data on the device directly. Also, in one place it shows that this has WiFi data logging but in another is says there is no WiFi module so I do not what to think about that. To get any better you will need one of the 5XX or 6XX series models. My other Geiger counter is an old Lionel CDV-700 model with 1 D cell battery, A Classic from the 70's I have had for over 20 years now but it is old style analog meter with a needle and does not have any of the many capabilities that this GQ GMC-SE has.Highly recommended.

This detector would come in incredibly handy when conducting inspections of older buildings or houses. As you may know, Radon radioactive, gas is sometimes a problem when it accumulates in basements so this would help you assess and detect any issues you might have in your home. Also, if you work at a laboratory where you might be exposed to isotopes, this might help you check yourself before leaving work and make sure you don’t bring any radioactive materials with you.

I keep this with my emergency kit, that has a shortwave radio, dehydrated foods, a medical kit, thermal blankets etc. It comes with a lanyard to use it handsfree, and it has a nice silicone cover to protect it, in case of any drops. You need a PC to download the recorded radioactive measurements. There is a whole website full of info that you can easily access.

I ordered this geiger counter because I wanted to have one on hand in these times of increasing possibility of attack by nuclear weapons. I was also very curious about the radiation levels in various produce and groceries I buy regularly. This geiger counter is very simple to operate which can be an advantage in times of stress when a serious threat from radiation is present. You just turn it on and cycle through the display and measurement unit options in a very intuitive way. Every time there's a count, it beeps and you see the CPM count go up by 1. This way it's easy to tell by either sound or display the relative amount of radiation present. The unit comes with a protective yellow silicone cover which wraps around it. The cover fits fairly loosely so there's some play between cover and unit as you handle it. I decided I liked it better without the cover so I removed in seconds very easily. Underneath is white plastic unit. Removing the cover makes it feel quite a bit less bulky to me but I suppose the cover might be nice if are prone to dropping things.I own a Mac so I'm out of luck and miss out on the things PC users can do with their geiger counters. I used to understand manufacturers only writing software for PCs back in the early 2000s but it's now 2023 and the share of Mac users has grown to over 15%. So 15% of your customers are losing out on features like participating in the radiation level reporting system that GQ maintains and downloading geiger counter data to their computers. I had to take a star off for that.GQ seems to have a solid reputation for making geiger counters and so I trust the readings and feel like the measurement part of the device is of good quality. However, I don't understand the readout that looks like a 1980s device. I've bought many really cheap digital items that incorporate beautiful little displays so I know it wouldn't be cost prohibitive to use an easy to read display like that. My eyes struggled to read the pixelated little icons on the top of the display and even the readout itself was quite pixelated. I had to take another star off for the display as that's the key interface between user and much needed data.I see this two ways. On one hand I'm really glad to own a geiger counter. I feel confident about the accuracy of the measurement and it seems solidly enough built to last a while. It's easy to operate intuitively and recharges with the ubiquitous USB C cable instead of the less common micro USB.On the other hand, it doesn't work with my Mac and the display is antiquated and hard to read. If you have a PC and don't care about the display I'd recommend it but perhaps Mac users or users with worse eyesight like mine would do better with a more modern interface.

I selected this model for the USB-c style connector to keep up with all my other devices. Unfortunately, receptor on the unit is very finicky and nearly all my current USB-c cords don't work to charge. Could have saved $ by sticking to older unit. The buttons seem a little fragile too Otherwise, it's good.

I've had a couple of months to play with this newest release from GQ, which seems to be based in Washington state in the US. With all the "certifications" and compliance notes from several well recognized laboratories, I hope to be able to trust this brand for when a bad situation should arise. Hoping that world disorder doesn't happen, it's a fun gadget to play with to see how radioactive everything is around us on a daily basis. Online reviews from videos and Amazon seems to rate this a fairly popular product that is affordable for any emergency kit. The Geiger counter includes a basic nuclear radiation safety guide to help us common folks figure out what levels of exposure should create a health risk. The unit has data logging and can be connected to a PC to share results via GMC's map that's also shared with other users with various sites around the US as noted on the back of the included exposure guide card. The user interface is very easy to navigate and I did not need instructions with the basic interface accessibility, but learning how to setup and read the scale values and what "CPM, uSv/h, and mR/h" would be very handy in the future. The protective yellow silicone sleeve is great for light bump protection and added grip, but a small point and shoot camera case will fit this nicely if you plan on storing with other "go bag" or emergency kit items. It is rechargeable and powered by a single 14500 3.7V 800mAh battery and includes a typpe-C charge cord. Good piece of additional insurance for right around $100 USD.
