I tested this glow-in-the dark dive slate in a pitch-black room. Using a dive light it “recharges” almost instantly to a bright acid-green. Over several minutes the initial intensity fades but the slate still glows enough to attract attention in dark environments. I don’t feel the glow feature makes inscriptions any easier to read but it can certainly help attract attention.High visibility yellow tubing secures the included standard lead pencil. The pencil writes exactly as would be expected but one with a wider lead would be especially helpful in the low-vis, dark environments that this slate is intended for. Because the tubing leash is long I am concerned that it can easily become entangled. Approximately 2” can be easily cut off the tubing without compromising function. An improvement would be a coiled “leash“ to secure the pencil. The slate can be secured to a BC via a robust plastic carabiner with wire gate. The carabiner has a 360-degree swivel which rotates smoothly. Gate opening is relatively small so it can be tricky to clip into a D-ring. On the positive side, this makes it unlikely that the slate could become inadvertently unclipped. A robust Fastex-type plastic buckle allows the slate to be completely detached from the webbing. This buckle can be opened with one hand and is also unlikely to open inadvertently. The slate scrubbed completely clean with either a household Scotch-Brite scrub sponge or Magic Eraser (I prefer the Magic Eraser as it is non-scratching).The two things I would change about this glow-in-the-dark slate are the: 1) pencil leash, and 2) pencil lead diameter. It’s a good slate as it is, but modifying those items would make it a great slate.

This is a slate made of standard "charge it with a flashlight" luminous material. The attached lanyard is a nice touch and allows easy and secure stowage in a drysuit or BCD pocket. The pencil is ok but I quickly replaced it with one from my local golf course; tradition, ya know? The 5x6 size is just right for relaying messages or details that hand signals just can't relay.I tried it out on a few night dives and it did a decent job of being visible without having to use my light. It's also useable during daylight, of course. All told, a good upgrade to a commodity item.
