Umbrella shaft appears to hold various diameter umbrella poles. A smaller diameter pole can be sinched with the tightening screw and somewhat by a plastic/rubber insert at the top of the shaft.In winds of 5-10 mph or more ...the umbrella pole would lean to one side or the other (IN THE SHAFT), regardless how tight the tightening screw is, and the insert at the top of the shaft would pop up (becoming useless) ...Can not use this stand in a windy condition.

We needed an outdoor solution for our valet stands where we use umbrellas in all sorts of weather, and needed something that would allow us to keep the umbrellas open during strong winds.

It's great for holding onto the umbrella even in strong wind. And I've used it as a weight for holding down tarps and decoration bases.

I agree with another reviewer regarding this not being cast iron. It most certainly is not. Which is really a bummer because that's false advertising; another case of bait and switch on Amazon. I would've liked it better if it were cast iron but it's seeming more and more that if you want a really high quality item, you need to buy it in an actual store, and it will certainly cost much more.Given that it's quite heavy and sturdy, I'll give it pretty good marks. It held up my 10+ foot umbrella in heavy wind. However, we had a very bad storm a few days ago, and I forgot to lower the umbrella, and, well, we obey the laws of physics at my house, and along with several tree limbs downed, the umbrella went flying down the street. Not the base's fault; that's sheer user error. I did not see Mary Poppins so I can only assume she did not make it.If it ever comes back in stock, I think it's worth it if you have a large umbrella. It looks okay and it will hold a larger umbrella if closed properly during heavy storms. If you have a 7 foot umbrella, I'd find something a little cheaper as you're not going to need this.
