1" (Dia.) Forstner Bit

From the Manufacturer

Freud's Carbide Forstner Bits drill clean holes in wood and most wood products. The micrograin carbide tips stay sharp many times longer than standard high speed steel and the sharp center spur accurately locates the center of your hole. Use for drilling flat bottom holes, pocket holes or overlapping holes.

I tried this because reviews said this bit would last longer. It may. My problem was that it did not cut a smooth cut in 3/4" birch plywood. The Freud PB-005 makes cleaner cuts.

You can't beat Freud for quality, razor sharp, quality steel, and while more expensive than cheap Chinese bits it will last much longer.

These carbide tipped forstner bits are great. I bought my original set in the early 2000’s. This isn’t a replacement, it is a size that wasn’t included! In my part time shop these last forever, stay sharp, and cur tear out free holes over and over. I have used more expensive forstner bits, but none have outperformed these!

I needed to drill several hundred holes in 3/4 inch plywood in preparation for installation of t-nuts. I created a guide so the bit would be perpendicular to the plywood while drilling. I was able to backup most of the holes with a spare piece of wood and had very little tear out. Even holes drilled without a backup could be drilled with little tear out if I went slow.I figured the bit would become dull, but that didn't happen. Great product.

I bought this bit because my hole saw was too shallow to go through the desk I wanted to drill a two inch hole in. I decided to splurge fro the 3 times more expensive carbide tip bit instead of the steel bit. I'm glad I did! This may be my new favorite tool, and definitely my favorite drill bit. It cut through the wood so much faster than my hole saw.One Pearl: I highly recommend a hammer drill. I used my drill with hammering turned off and it cut well. When I turned on the hammering it was a whole different experience. I'd estimate that it cut 8-10 times faster with the hammering. In summary, this is one incredible drill bit.I can't comment on how long it will stay sharp but carbide bits can easily be sharpened by a professional. Also, if it's any indicator, this bit produced a surprisingly low amount of heat when in use. My hole saw used to get so hot it smoked, not this one.
