I bought two of these units earlier this year. On assembly one of them was dodgy and stiff. It turns out that the armature was colliding with the first post I used. I tried the post from the second unit, and it also collided internally. The magnetic base was machined with a dull spoon.

So first of all, the action on this thing is fantastic. All the clamps are sized just right so it takes minimal torque on the knobs to lock things in place. And the two arm knobs are super easy to tighten. Mag strength is great, just stay away from sheet metal. The heavier the steel you can mag to the better. Lastly, the action of the mag lever. While this is great as well, being super easy to flick on or off. However, the only fault I found is the fact that it is butter easy to flick to the off position. Bump it with your hand or drop something on the lever and both stand and indicator can possibly go crashing to the floor. If they could add some kind of catch or spring to help keep it in the on position, I'd give it 5 stars. Should also add that the 2nd clamp is sized accept both 1/4" and 5/16" posts. Nowhere did I see 5/16 or 8mm mentioned in the specs, which is what I needed...got lucky I guess.

Magnetic switch turns so effortlessly and prevents unwanted movements when setting into place. Would have given 5 stars if I didn't have to machine out the burr left behind in the indicator clamp for the 1/4" hole.

I needed an indicator base with an 8 mm thread to mount on an engine block to check crankshaft runout. When threading this base post into an 8 mm socket, the runout on the post is at least 3/8", maybe 1/2". When Fowler was an American made product, such low quality work would have gone in the scrap metal bin. But that's what we get apparently from the new Fowler brand name.PS Yes the base still works, this just reflects how poorly it was made.

For the money its greatOnly reason i took one star off is becauseThe face plate breaks off if you drop it on a hard floor. The face plate is what holds the magnet in on or off. I broke my very firat one a few years ago and my apprentice dropped my second but i like them enough to be another 9/10 would recommend.
