The Fowler Economy Depth Micrometers, depending on the model, have a measurement range of 0 to 4" or 0 to 6", a base of 2.5" or 4", and a resolution (or smallest graduation interval) of 0.001", with + or – 0.0002" of accuracy. The vernier scale provides precise measurements in fine units. Depending on the range of the model, the gauges include either or 0.176" diameter measuring rods. The units have a ratchet thimble and locking clamp for accuracy. The bases of the units are ground, hardened, and lapped for durability and accuracy. They have a satin chrome finish to reduce glare when reading measurements. They come with two wrenches and a hardened case. The gauges conform to Federal Accuracy specifications. Depth gauges are typically used in manufacturing, machining, and mechanical engineering. Contact Fowler, an American company. Depth gauges are precision measuring instruments used to determine the depth of any shape that has a step, groove, or slot. These gauges often take the form of sliders that travel on a measuring beam or rods, are moved to position by hand, and then adjusted with a calibrated screw. The base of the gauge rests at the top of the shape whose recession is to be measured, while the beam or rods extend to the bottom of the recession to determine the measurement. Gauge position is read from a graduated scale, dial, counters, or an electronic display. Fowler manufactures inspection and measurement instruments such as electronic indicators, calipers, bore gages, and digital scales. The company, founded in 1946, is headquartered in Newton, MA.

Opened the case and first time trying to close the case the left side latch is broken this case feels like it would be a cheap 2 dollar toy. Very unsatisfied with, we buy something expensive and good and you send it out with a cheap case to protect the tooling.

Smaller anvil works great for limited room.

Exterior packaging was taped (retaped?) but inside the bag containing the instrument and the other bag containing the adjustment tools was ripped open - as in separate pieces, not just torn.I assembled 0-1" rod in tool and the zero-point was 0.026" out of whack - a significant amount.Maybe worth $30, certainly not $155 after tax.Returned.

I bought this depth mic because I had to return my buddies Mitutoyo depth mic that I had on loan for about 6 months. I feel this Fowler is every bit as good as the Mitutoyo at a fraction of the price. The ratchet is strong but not so strong that it pushes off your measurement. For anyone that needs a depth mic I would definitely consider a Fowler!
