Instructions

  1. Remove the plug from either the left or right side timing access holes.
  2. To install, hand tighten the J42083 Automatic Timing Pin Lock into the timing access hole.
  3. Preload the spring on the automatic timing lock by pushing the slide handle forward and turn it clockwise to engage either of the two locking slots.
  4. Manually, turn engine in direction of rotation(usually counter clockwise..refer to Caterpillar Service Manual) until a notice “click” sound is heard. The automatic timing pin plunger has now engaged the flywheel timing holes in either the top center compression or exhaust stroke.
  5. To remove, turn slide handle counter clockwise to release spring tension on the plunger(if plunger doesn’t retract from flywheel with light pressure, jog the flywheel back and forth). Unscrew from flywheel housing.

The timing pin didn’t seem to want to engage the flywheel, but it’s a good idea, I was hoping it would work.The turning tool and the injector height tool worked as advertised.

10thou difference in height compared to the caterpillar tool of same part number. Also does not have the 2 heights cut in the rod like it’s suppose to. Save your money and buy the cat branded one.

You have to be very careful when engaging the timing pin... it is very ez to bend if it pops in the TDC hole and you rotate the motor even lightly... its not ez to hear the pin drop into the /timing hole and if you continue to rotate the motor, the timing tool is toast. I had to use my fingers in a larger port underneath the timing port to feel when the hole is near and then slowly and gently rotate until pin locks in place.... I bent mine and kinda straightened it to work for TDC on cylinder 6. But it's pretty much shot using it once. I'll use a 5/16 bolt moving forward..... good idea, weak metal pin.... rotating tool worked great.. that gives its a 3 star... don't buy it for the timing pin....

If you know what these are and know how to use them, it wouldn't make any sense not having them for what they cost. Anyone who owns a old school ride with a Cat motor are mostly half mechanics and most of them still working needs to be worked on. This purchase was for a friend who did a complete inframe himself and having the right tools is half of getting it done.
