I love the Focusrite Scarlet. It's my second. It arrived perfectly, one day later than expected, but works perfectly at a fair price.

This might be long, so here is my synopsis:Works fine as an input to my iPAD 10th gen but lacks switches to set the modes and needs Windows to set modes with utility program.I already had a Windows setup with a 4 channel DAW running Reaper but after getting an iPad 10th gen for my wife, and trying out GarageBand, I wanted a way to record singing and guitar playing with that program. I’ve bought and sent back four different devices that were unsatisfying for one reason or another, then I got this Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 3rd Gen. This device has all the desired modes, like monitor on/off, line/instrument, 48V condenser power and input PAD, but I discovered that there were no buttons or switches to make the selections. The manufacture provided a program with a slightly confusing graphic interface where I had to make my mode selections. The unit would then remember the settings even after power down. Here is the kicker. That program is a windows program! There was an iOS program on their web site, but that did nothing but ask if my wifi was on! What? And, their web site said their support for this in iOS was discontinued. So, if I wanted to change mode, like I do when I needed to turn on the input monitor for, say, the video record program, I have to unplug everything and plug it into my Windows laptop and run that configuration utility. So dumb. All that aside, this thing works and sounds great and it doesn’t seem to use much power. A simple USB C Splitter with a type C PW input and 1 USB-C data port worked fine. Even with the weak iPAD power brick I can power the iPAD and the Scarlett 4i4. Note that I did need a USB-A to USB-C adapter, as the Scarlet cable is type A at the host end.

This is an update. Love the interface now. It didn't work when connected to a Satechi multi-port USB adaptor that Apple recommends for Macbook pros with M1 chips. The Satechi is supposed to have enough power to power the Scarlett 4i4, but it's a piece of crap and doesn't. Don't spend $100 on the Satechi. Search out something that will power the audio interfaces that you use, etc. The Satechi has 1A power output which should power the Scarlett 4i4 but it doesn't. Get something with 1.5A or higher IMO.When I plugged the Scarlett 4i4 directly into my Macbook pro M1, it did exactly what it was supposed to do and the setup screen immediately popped up. It worked with the Focusrite controller at that point. I do have a suggestion for the company. Add a separate power option (USB-C or whatever) because newer laptops (like Macs) are getting fewer input/output options and it would be nice to be able to plug the audio interface into a USB power station or whatever and then hook it to the computer. Other than that, awesome piece of equipment.I hooked up the Scarlett 4i4 to my Macbook Pro M1 chip via a Satechi MULTI-PORT ADAPTER and nothing happened. The lights lit for a second then nothing. I downloaded the Focusrite controller and it says no hardware is connected. I spent an hour troubleshooting and still nothing. I don't have time for crap that doesn't work as advertised. I have an old PreSonus Audiobox that works fine so there is no reason this one shouldn't.

The audio interface is really a great investment for someone who is just starting out. The 2i2 gives only two inputs and 2 outputs but this 4i4 gives 4 inputs (2 mic/line level + 2 only line level inputs) and 4 outputs which is useful in the long run. This also has Loopback feature which is especially useful for podcasts, streamers.Sound quality is amazing. Noise reduction is pretty good. Use good quality cables and mic.For mic, Shure SM-58 seems to be a great choice. Studio monitors and headphones are recommended (but not mandatory) to get the most out of your Music Production quality. You can add these gradually in your music arsenal. This 4i4 also has MIDI so if you already have a keyboard which has MIDI outputs, you can connect it to the interface using MIDI cable. (MIDI OUT from keyboard to MIDI IN of Scarlett).Works fine and MIDI data is captured (used Ableton, but should work in any DAW).The Focusrite Control software works fine. It allows you to toggle functions like Air, Pad and toggle Line/Inst inputs and also route outputs, control volume, or mute.I think it's good that these functions are operated by software and not by physical buttons, which makes the audio interface less crowded and clean (as opposed to having knobs everywhere). This also makes the size of the interface smaller and portable. The only problem is the default cable that comes with any Focusrite Scarlett model. It is of extremely low quality and loose. Keeps disconnecting.I went ahead and bought Amazon Basics braided cable (red) as you can see in the photo. (Or buy a good cable which is short, as long cable increases attenuation.)This is a nice cable from Amazon and solves disconnection issues. It also looks awesome with that matching red color!Focusrite should collaborate with Amazon and include this cable as default!!If you are looking for a good audio interface around 20k with long time performance, go with 4i4.Other one you can go for is Solid State Logic SSL2+ (4 i/p and 4o/p) but this one is costly and big size, not too portable.
