I am fairly new to fly fishing, but this reel looks and feels like it will be more than enough reel to satisfy my needs for the time being. Study aluminum material and holds plenty of backing and line. I am using 5/6 weight forward taper floating line.

OK, this is not the best fly fishing reel I have in my arsenal, but I'm giving it five stars because its quality-to-price ratio really can't be beat. It came set up for left-hand retrieve, which is what I use, but I think it's easy to reverse for right-hand retrieve. It seems to be well made and is nice and light, so it will balance well on my 5-wt rods. I would call it a mid-arbor reel, which means it will carry plenty of line and backing, but will also retrieve quickly without too much line "memory" like you can get on smaller arbors.The drag adjusts rapidly and I think I would go through the entire range of drag pressures I normally use in just six or so clicks - it tightens very quickly. But that's not a big issue, as I usually bring in a fish with direct line control rather than putting it on drag. I only fish rivers/streams for trout, so my typical fish is between 6 and 20 inches. For bigger targets, you might want a better drag system found in much more expensive reels. The knob is rubber, which I hope holds up well. I wish it was a polished wood or metal, but that's a fairly small complaint.

I ordered one pre spooled with line and received an empty reel but the reel it's self seems to be ok enough for the truck tool box rod I have it planned for

Excellent craftsmanship on this reel. I did find that when cranking the reel with a bit of pressure toward the spool stopped the handle from turning. I added a flat washer to the exsiting washer which raised the handle away from the body of the spool and it now works like a champ. I am anxiously awaiting fly line so I can give this reel a try. All in all I am surprisingly happy with the quality of the reel.

Wow! I'm really impressed with this reel! I wasn't expecting such nice quality! For anyone who wants to learn to fly fish this is a GREAT first reel! And it's a reel you won't ever retire as long as it's working! Great Investment!

Is this reel on par with the quality of an Orvis? No. But for the price point, this is a great reel to have in your fly fishing arsenal. My husband is the fly fisherman so he had plenty of line and backing to set this up and put it on one of his rods. He said he liked the way the drag worked and how easy it was to adjust.
