Works and Fel-Pro uses a combination of rubbery material and the cork-like substance to make a good seal. I don't worry that the mechanic will accidentally break this one before it goes on. The material makes it idiot-proof.

Our Subaru’s valve covers were leaking and after watching a bunch of YouTube videos I decided to try and tackle the repair myself.I found this kit had good reviews and it seemed like a good value for the price. The hardest part of the install was getting the old seal off, but after that these gaskets were a perfect fit. They seem to be performing well and have stopped the leaking oil.I would recommend this kit for your 4 cylinder outback’s valve cover leaking issue.

This gasket set worked perfectly for my 2000 Toyota Tundra 4.7l. It contained the valve cover gaskets, spark plug seals, and metal covered rubber washers for the valve cover bolts. The kit also contains some other washers/rings that I didn't use. I'm not exactly sure what they are for; I just replaced the existing washers on the parts I was removing. I put a little dab of "Genuine Toyota Fluid 00295-00103 Formed-in-Place Oil Pan Gasket - 3 oz. Tube" on the engine surface where the gaskets make sharp turns and on the mating surfaces of the half moons. Watch some youtube videos for details. I let the valve cover gaskets sit in the sun for a few minutes before pressing them in the valve covers and then reinstalled everything. They fit perfectly and don't leak. The hardest part of the job was removing the old spark plug seals. The tops tore off quickly so after trying several other methods I finally carefully tapped a small screw driver between the valve cover and the seal to break it free, then inserted a thicker screw driver to wiggle/twist it enough so I could get pliers on it and pull it out. Be sure you install the spark plug seals the right direction - the opening is slightly tapered and you want the narrower end at the top of the metal spark plug tube.

While these gaskets may not be the same color as the OEM they function well and the price is right. The dealer a few months ago quoted me $699 to replace these gaskets- the parts cost was $41. I looked in the maintenance manual and figured out that in addition to removing the sparkplug electrical connections, bolts and coils (8) that each cover had 9 ten mm bolts to remove. After clearing some hose obstructions, I got my impact driver, extensions, and 10 mm socket and went to town. When removing covers take a small 2x4 and tap loose with a small mallet. Remove cover and gasket, clean gasket surfaces with small scraper then wipe with cloth moistened with isopropyl alcohol or similar; be careful and ensure no foreign material falls and remains in valve enclosure. Then take a standard screwdriver and bend the 4 tabs holding each sparkplug gasket in place. I used a pick that had a 90 degree bend in it to remove each sparkplug gasket. Clean mating surfaces then install new gasket so that when you reinstall the valve cover that the sparkplug gasket will slide over sparkplug tube; hint, the open edge of the gasket should be installed such that it mates with the inner surface of the valve cover- that leaves the rounded edge up. The rounded edge will easily slide over sparkplug tube. Before reinstalling cover place a small bead of Hi temp RTV on same locations you removed it from with scraper. Inspect valve enclosure on engine block, ensure no foreign material has fallen in- the tape on your sparkplug wires can harden and crack over time and when you remove/install the valve covers you can break off pieces and they can fall in valve enclosure. Make sure you stand on a stool and get a birds eye view of valve enclosure. Reinstall cover and torque each bolt to 5 ft/lbs (basically hand tight) in a star type pattern to place equal torque on cover (don't forget that there are 9 bolts per cover- not eight). This might be a good time to check the torque on the sparkplugs- on my 2001 Tundra/ 2002 Sequoia the torque was 13ft/lbs. Reinstall sparkplug coils and bolt them in place, this is also a good time to replace any bolts that have stripped bolt heads. Install sparkplug electrical connections to proper locations. Each side should take about 2 hrs.
