One of the most flexible MIDI boxes I've ever used. Out of the box before you try to configure anything with a computer, it has 3 settings, two pairs of in/out, one in/split to 3 out and 3 in/merge to 1 out. Plus if you plug in a midi controller with a USB cable, it's a host and can transmit/receive midi to any midi port and (if configured) any USB port. In/Out/Thru/Merge does it all. As long as your midi channels are set properly, it will get you where you need to go.

The unit will auto detect if the MIDI cable plugged into it is input or output. Works with some gear, not others. Incompatible with my Haken Continuum / Eagan matrix. In general input/output detect was buggy IN USB/DAW mode requiring me to unplug and reset it multiple times for it to work.No response from ESI on support inquiry. At a simplar price, I think the MIO XM is a better unit for my needs....going to but that one.

I was able to use this to reload the presets onto my Korg M1, this is not true for other cables I tried.

I was having an issue when using a single midi port to chain a number of instruments together, probably due to a Eurorack midi converter getting in the way of two drum machines. Using this device totally solved the issue and massively expanded my setup, giving me the potential to use upto 8x16 midi channels! That’s just over a pound per channel! Beautifully made, plugged it in and Logic immediately identified it, providing a drop down with 16 channels for each of the 8 ports. Works perfectly. Highly recommended.

Sends and receives sysex dumps flawlessly on my Windows 10 system through both MIDI-OX and XGworks, which for some reason is a difficult feat for a lot of other USB MIDI interfaces these days. This might be the cheapest sysex-capable interface on the market right now.

I don't know if this is specific to Windows 10 or Presonus Studio One, but if I restart my DAW then all of the "detected" midi outputs no longer work and won't recover until I power down everything (even a regular reboot doesn't seem to clear it). Also, the USB DOES NOT support midi host - you can not run USB midi device in stand-alone - this is not made clear in the product description anywhere.
