Rectal thermometers have a similar bulb-like appearance to the oral thermometer, but usually have a shorter and thicker tip for ease of use.
Other thermometers like armpit and oral ones may be discomforting for an infant and hard to use. In addition, infants and some older adults cannot hold a thermometer under the arm or tongue long enough for a temperature reading.
Pediatricians recommend them for children under 3 months because they are generally more reliable and accurate than other thermometers. Since rectal thermometers check the internal body temperature, they are less likely to be influenced by external factors, which leads to a more accurate reading.

As a new, first time parent, that first potential fever is panic inducing. Even in the middle of the night, my partner and I were easily able to use this thermometer and even fussy, our baby didn't mind having it used rectally (which our pediatrician recommended as it's the most accurate way for newborns). We just used vaseline to make sure that it was as comfortable for him as possible. Highly recommend.
