Haven't landed a fish with it yet but it seems good for my 8 year old son to learn on.

For the money, this is a good reel. The drag works well and the rest of the mechanics are smooth. My one complaint about this reel is that the paint Eagle Claw decided to use on the reel does not stick to the metal very well, and cosmetic blemishes have developed quite quickly and spontaneously. This reel seems to be identical to the Goture ALC 5/6 which also sells for $25 on Amazon. Goture has left the reel in a natural aluminum finish, so I imagine blemishes won't show so readily as they do on the Eagle Claw. I've matched this reel to an Eagle Claw Featherlight 5/6 fiberglass fly rod, and it makes a nice combo; around $50 for the set. That's a pretty sweet entry package in the fly fishing. The large arbor design of the reel is nice because it reduces the need for excess backing, and it makes for a nice quick retrieve. A nice reel to start with, and a great reel to keep as a back-up.Since writing the above review. My reel was stolen and I've purchased a new one. I have to say, I really like this reel. The paint job on my new reel is flawless, so maybe there is a sample-to-sample problem at Eagle Claw. This reel really grows on you. Smooth drag that is easy to dial in, the spool is a nice large arbor design that is also wide, so your line doesn't just pile up in the middle. It is true, the reel that is pictured is not the current design (go look at the Goture reel). For the money, you really can't go wrong. This reel works, and it works well enough to catch plenty of fish, and have a great time doing it. If my expensive fly reel ever went missing, I might consider just replacing it with this reel.

Just getting started and it it didn't work for crap. Let out line when I cast and was hard to reel up. Then I realized I had it on backwards and it works fine now.

Buyers should know that the reel does not in fact look like the one in the picture on amazon. That is neither good nor bad. The reel itself actually looks like various reels from Sage and other high end makers which make a similar design. The design in the picture suggests that the buyer may be getting a reel similar to a Battenkill or a Cabelas CGR. Not so. The design has a more "open" aspect to it. So, just beware. That said, I think the reel will be very good for my intentions. I have the Battenkill and love it. But this reel was 1/4 the price and I suspect that it will perform just as well on the trout streams of the Driftless area. I bought it as a backup reel and although I have not used it yet, it seems sturdy and well made. I have the Eagle Claw 3/4 weight rod and the 5/6 (as well as some others). I use the Battenkill on the 3/4 and I will put this new reel on the 5/6. If you have the discretionary funds and prefer a piece or "art" or a finely crafted reel, so be it. But if you are new to fly fishing, need a backup reel, or just want an inexpensive but functional reel for a second, third or fourth rod, this one deserves a close look. The fish won't know the difference, right? I fish mostly for trout in SW Wisconsin, so the drag is not a significant feature. One would be best served to buy this reel along with an Eagle Claw rod and spend the money saved on gear that really makes a difference in the field like waders and wading boots.

Not very well made....If they put half the energy they put into their fly rods, this would be a great reel.
