This is renewed, so comes at a bargain price, but came sealed and looks good as new. It's been working flawlessly, so if you want to use a handsfree scanner for your business, this seems like a great way to get the famed Zebra brand without paying the full price. Like any handsfree scanner, this lets you or your employees avoid having to scan each object, reducing the time and effort spent, especially on such a repetitive task. This catches barcodes impressively well, my friend swears by the Zebra brand, and trying this out, I see why. Even one failed scan really slows you down, but this little device kept up nicely and doesn't have any issues or mistakes. It was easy to set up, and we started using it within half a hour.

I wanted to get a scanner and barcode system set up with my vendor table to make ringing out customers faster for when I'm doing larger events. I have a Square Terminal that I use for transactions, so I needed something that was going to work with that. This worked great. Setup was very easy, and although I needed the Square hub in order to get everything to connect together and have power, once that was done, it worked like a breeze. The scanner sits upright without needing to be screwed down, although it does have the option to do that if you are in a permanent location. The scanner can tilt to scan upright or at an angle, but both have worked just as well for scanning the barcodes. If you need a handsfree barcode scanner, this is definitely a good one to get.

We scan sometimes hundreds of 1d barcodes a day at my job. Messy barcodes, faint barcodes, smeared, folded, torn barcodes. I have spent 5 years searching for the ultimate scanner. I have mostly used handheld scanners with auto continuous mode propped up with some contraption.I have bought scanners from several companies. Some of them claim to have features they don't have, others have unadvertised features if you find the manuals for similar models sold by other companies. Most won't do everything I need or have difficult to find code books. None of them scan well. Most will pick up random digits from my wood grain desk every now and again. I can spend 20 seconds waving a barcode in front of one of my handheld scanners only for it to suddenly scan double. I hate(d) scanners.I spent years finding the best thermal printer, and it was an old timey zebra unit... so it shouldn't have surprised me that they make the best scanner as well. This scans 1D barcodes the first time every time. It never double scans. All of the Motorola and Zebra codes I need worked with this scanner regardless of the model the code was made for. I used to have to print codes, but this scans off my phone or even pc screen without issues. There also seems to exist configuration software, though I haven't tried this as it is windows only. This works so will it has come in handy for other uses besides my primary 1D uses. Now if I see a 2D code on my desktop, I can just pick this unit up and scan it, where as I used to have to either print a copy to scan or scan with my phone and airdrop the website to my desktop. This reads QR codes better than my iPhone camera does.I scan everything. Customer needs a tracking number for a parcel I'm sending out? I'll just scan the parcel into the email. Need to find a new source to purchase a particular product? Just scan the UPC into a search engine. Need to bring up one of my products on a website? I'll just scan the EAN into whatever marketplace I'm using. This scans everything immediately. The condition of the actual barcode doesn't even seem to matter that much, as long as there is a clean spot across a little bit of the code, it works. Without hyperbole, this is the best scanner I have ever used and I have used a lot.

As a point of sale dealer, technician and reseller I feel uniquely qualified to review this item. My company goes through handheld barcode scanners like candy on Easter. They get used heavily and break. A barcode scanner is like a light bulb. They break when dropped, get dim with extended use and just plain burn out. We must sell, install or service close to 100 per year. I am very picky about them and know quality units from low-end up to the high-end medical and serialized tech handling industries. The DS9208 branded Motorola, Symbol and currently Zebra are all the same device. There has been some consolidation of manufacturers over the years. This unit was “refurbished” and we were impressed with the quality and condition of the unit. This type of scanner is a favorite of liquor and convenience stores that do a lot of counter transactions. Hand held units cause more wrist strain and are not as fast as a unit that sits stationary on the counter. This brand, make, unit is the gold standard in the POS industry. We prefer Symbol/Motorola/Zebra over all brands in our business. You see when a scanner like this fails or has to be replaced, sending someone to replace it or even mailing out a replacement essentially costs you anything you would have made on the unit in the first place. That is why I am so very picky about barcode scanners used in our company. In my opinion this unit is not as robust as the orbital model, it is a close second. The presentation control on the side is confusing and slows things down if you accidentally press it while scanning. This is one of the top ten units for retail barcode scanners on the market. You won’t get in trouble for selecting this unit. We generally inventory similar models in all of our technicians’ parts kits as we go through a lot of them. While not the cheapest, as I stated, can you afford to use low end units that fail after a few months or year when these last a solid 3-5 years under normal use?We keep the low-end scanners as give aways or inventory input in the back room. Not at a busy counter where they will die in a matter of days.Gripes and complaints. This is a 2D scanner so it can scan barcodes on screens (so it says. I was not able to make this unit do so in my limited testing). It also can be parsed to scan Drivers Licenses. Again, check specific models as sometimes that is a software upgrade and specific programming may be needed. Use the Zebra 123 scanner software obtainable on Zebra website to download specification on the ROM inside your unit. Big complaint, they did not include the quick programming guide with this unit! Zebra in their stupidity, have a downloadable PDF of the guide but it is formatted in like a foldable brochure so when you print it out to scan the programming barcodes the unit cannot read them because they are too small. My unit came programmed so that it did not enter a carriage return after scanning a barcode (required for most point of sale software). Luckily, I had one of those manuals from a DS4208 laying around and was able to scan the barcodes to put a carriage return in it so it would be functional. This can be a disaster at a client site where finding a printer is not always possible and they need a barcode scanner right away. The manual for this unit is 400 pages long! Can you imagine having to sift through that thing to find the proper programming barcodes to get the thing working, or worse yet, having to download the software, connect the scanner (and hope the software recognizes it) and try to figure out the college level course to use the software. We do not allow our customers to buy their own barcode scanners anymore. If they do we will not touch them nor support them. The number of problems can be enormous. First of all, counterfeits are everywhere. You will know you got one because they break quickly are generally too cheap for the brand and have other problems. Another issue out there is retailer specific ROMs burned into the firmware. For instance, we got a batch of scanners refurbished from CVS or Walgreens. They used special control codes that rendered them unusable in standard point of sale software. We could not reprogram them. I still have a box of them we use in the computer lab for limited tested. This unit tested out OK and we will be putting in into production. I will follow up if there are any issues. It is a good scanner for its proper application and my retailers love them. Being a counter model drops on the floor are not much of a problem. This unit is rated about 7 drops from 4 feet I believe. Don’t drop it to test. One of our favorite units.
