I'm no electrical whiz, but I've learned that most portable generators have what is called a "floating neutral" or "open neutral" as opposed to a fixed ground in their circuitry. It has to do with their not being grounded to the Earth like your house circuitry, for instance, and that's why your generator might have a ground lug and a sticker suggesting you ground the unit. Now, short of pounding a conductor rod into the ground and running a wire to it from the ground lug on the generator, this product will complete the loop between the neutral and the ground blade on your device's plug (that third, rounded, blade on the plug is the ground, and it's there to send electricity safely away if something goes wrong with your power circuit). You will find some who feel grounding or bonding plugs are dangerous, since they will just send power from the hot leg to the neutral leg of the plug going to the device being powered, counting on the breaker or a GFCI (if one is in the circuit) to trip and stop the current flow. But many generators simply won't power certain devices if one is not used. So to prevent an outage, I keep one with my generators and make sure my power cords and extension cords are in top condition.Bottom line? If you choose to use one, this particular bonding plug appears to be well-made and safer than a home-made solution.

I just got a portable generator and the tester read I had an open ground. To fix the problem I plugged in this devise. After doing this it read... correct. It does take away (1) of the (2) 120 volt receptacles, though, so I used the 30 amp one with a 3 way splitter; 10 guage wire to give me more options. I am always sure to never exceed the max watts MY generator is rated.

Worked great to use with honda generator in train furnace. But the item itself should have a safety label on it to make sure that no one plugs this in into a wall outlet

To comply with NEC codes, which are designed to keep you safe, you need to have a single ground - neutral bond in your independently derived electrical system. This is great for smaller AC power generation / inverter devices as piles of these are coming out of China without this bond. Why this is important is normally ground carries no power. But now say the hot wire in your toaster oven comes in contact with the metal case of your toaster oven. You want that power to return to source over the ground wire and pop the breaker / protection circuitry, thus clearing the fault. If you don't do this, then you risk energizing everything on the ground wire as it may not have a return path to source unless of course you put your hands on stuff and end up completing the circuit through your body. However, the human body won't draw enough current to pop the breaker while at the same time it is generally considered not good for your health to be completing circuits with your body. So you need a low resistance ground wire bonded to neutral to draw enough current to pop the breaker.

I don’t understand how it work, I just know it does perfectly! We could not understand why our external inverter would not power anything on our 2017 LTV Unity. Our LTV mechanic said we needed to link the neutral and the ground in one of the plugs. We found this and perfection! Now we use this for short boondock trips vs using so much propane.

It has worked flawlessly. Tight fit in socket, sealed end - far less chance to short if generator is being used outside, in light rain or snow. Used mine daily for a 9 day RV trip, 3 hours a day recharging house batteries and occasionally at home on my solar power station. Bright colored - makes it EASY to find too.
